Job Description Characteristics of Work Under the direction of the Center Administrator, the Teacher is responsible for planning and organizing, implementing activities; record-keeping and reporting; supervising and guiding; training, and supporting and collaborating to ensure the delivery of comprehensive services to children enrolled in the Head Start program. Incumbents are expected to provide all children, including those with disabilities, with a safe, nurturing, engaging, enjoyable, and secure learning environment in order to help them gain the confidence necessary to succeed in their present environment and to deal with later responsibilities in school and life. Essential Functions These essential functions include but are not limited to, the following. The Agency may identify and include additional essential functions. Planning and Developing Prepares and implements daily plans, schedules, and activities in accordance with the Division of Children’s Services’ work plan. Plans for field trips in accordance with program schedules and field trip plans. Arrange classroom space into well-organized learning centers. Participates in Individualized Education Program (IEP) staff meetings as required. Makes a minimum of two (2) scheduled home visits per child per program year. Conducts two staff-parent conferences per child per program year. Provides positive discipline and supervision for children at all times. Rides with Bus Drivers as assigned. Participates in the performance evaluation of the Teacher Assistant and the Classroom Disability Assistant where applicable. Implementing Activities Assesses and requests classroom supplies and equipment. Demonstrates and encourages good eating habits in accordance with the agency’s family style meal services procedures. Maintains a clean, safe and healthy learning environment. Establishes classroom rules with children. Demonstrates support of individual children in a positive and non-threatening manner. Demonstrates effective and consistent behavior management techniques in the classroom. Record Keeping and Reporting Conducts development screening, assessment, and evaluation of children. Distributes developmentally appropriate activities and resources to promote the parent's role as the primary educator of their child. Refers children to the appropriate component for services. Documents and maintains required child records in the Galileo computerized assessment program. Prepares and submits program reports as required. Develops and implements children’s education plans using the agency’s written curriculum. Reports cases of suspected child abuse/neglect in accordance with state law. Communicating and Guiding Meets, greets, observes, and assesses children daily. Recruit volunteers and in-kind contributions. Serves on program committees and boards of other organizations affiliated with children and families. Training and Supporting Participates in staff meetings, parent meetings, and training sessions. Participates in educational and professional training as required to maintain appropriate credentials. Additional Responsibilities Performs other duties and assignments as directed by supervisor. Qualification Bachelor of Science in Child Care and Family Education, Early Childhood Education, Child Development Technology, Elementary Education, or other related field, with one (1) year of experience in working with preschool children. OR Associate of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or directly related field with one (1) year of experience in working with preschool children. Special Requirements Applicant must: -pass Criminal Background and Child Abuse Central Registry Checks; -meet State health requirements; -have the ability to communicate effectively; -demonstrate proper use of grammar, legible manuscript, and cursive writing. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands and fingers, and touch or feel objects when interacting with children. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 lbs. if necessary to lift a child. The employee primarily works in an indoor environment. Supervisory Control The Teacher is directly responsible to the Center Administrator, who is responsible to the Director of Center Operations. The Teacher will be evaluated at least semi-annually by the Center Administrator. The evaluation will be conducted through a process of performance monitoring and progress reviews conducted by the Children’s Services Specialist in collaboration with the Center Administrator. The evaluation will be reviewed by the Director of Children’s Services. Essential Functions These essential functions include but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the Agency. Cleans building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and/or vacuuming, as required. Gathers and empties trash. Service, clean, and supply restrooms on a continuous basis each day. Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures, taking care to store and lock cleaning materials out of the reach/access of children. Monitors building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created. Moves furniture, equipment, and supplies manually or by using a hand truck, dolly, or maintenance cart. Notifies the Center Administrator concerning the need for major repairs. Spreads ice melt on stairs, ramps, porches, and sidewalks, as warranted. Sets up for meetings and functions. Cleans and polishes furniture, fixtures, mirrors, and windows. Dusts furniture, walls, and equipment. Strips, seals, finishes, and polishes floors. Mixes chemicals for cleaning. Makes minor repairs (changing bulbs, switch plates, outlet covers, tightening screws, toilet seats, and minor plumbing repairs). Planning and Organizing Stores garbage, trash, and other items for disposal in accordance with proper sanitation procedures. Requests janitorial supplies. Implementing Activities Inspects buildings and grounds for unsafe conditions. Removes hazardous debris from center grounds on a daily basis. Cleans floors, bathrooms, and classrooms daily in accordance with proper cleaning procedures. Performs cleaning tasks such as dusting and washing windows and walls on a regular basis. Recording, Keeping, and Reporting Maintains an inventory of adequate janitorial supplies and keeps classrooms and bathrooms properly supplied. Communicating and Guiding Performs minor replacements and repairs to fixtures and furnishing in accordance with the work plan., including replacing light bulbs, as needed. Training and Supporting Participates in staff meetings, parent meetings, training sessions, workshops, conferences, and parent activities. Recruit volunteers and in-kind contributions.
