Controls Engineer (Siemens TIA Portal) Location: Bedford, UK Salary: £50,000 £60,000 (DOE) + Benefits Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent About the Company Our client is a well-established systems integrator specialising in the design, build, and commissioning of bespoke automation and control solutions across a range of industries including manufacturing, process, and materials handling. With continued growth and a strong project pipeline, they are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to join their Bedford-based team. Role Overview As a Controls Engineer , youll take responsibility for the design, development, and implementation of industrial control systems using Siemens TIA Portal . You will work across the full project lifecyclefrom concept and design through to commissioning and client handoverdelivering high-quality, reliable automation solutions. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and commission control systems using Siemens TIA Portal , including PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems. Produce control panel designs, system documentation, and functional design specifications. Conduct on-site commissioning and fault-finding as required (UK & occasional overseas travel). Liaise with clients and internal teams to ensure technical requirements are met. Work collaboratively with electrical design and mechanical engineering teams to deliver turnkey automation solutions. Ensure all work complies with relevant safety and quality standards. Essential Skills & Experience Proven experience as a Controls Engineer / Automation Engineer within a systems integration or industrial automation environment. Strong hands-on experience with Siemens TIA Portal (S7, WinCC, Step 7, etc.). Competence in PLC programming , HMI/SCADA configuration , and industrial networking (Profinet, Profibus, Ethernet/IP). Understanding of control panel design , electrical schematics , and industrial safety standards . Ability to manage multiple projects and work to deadlines. Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for commissioning when required. Desirable Experience with other PLC platforms (Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, or Omron). Knowledge of motion control, robotics, or process automation. Background in sectors such as FMCG, food & beverage, or materials handling.
