Building a sustainable tomorrow BAM Infrastructure is recruiting for a Design Manager to join the infrastructure business to work on our British Antarctic Survey (BAS) framework contract. The role will be within an existing team, working collaboratively with BAS and consultants to design and deliver infrastructure and buildings in Antarctica. The role can be based from any of our UK offices and will involve regular travel to BASs headquarters in Cambridge to maximise collaboration with the client and their advisors. Your mission Manage the design process to deliver safe, technically compliant, cost-efficient, and coordinated design packages during pre-construction and project delivery stages. Liaise with clients, external design consultants, supply chain partners, project delivery teams, digital construction specialists, and other relevant stakeholders Manage the design information release, production, and approval of technical drawings, chair design workshops, coordinate complex design packages, and validate design details Provide guidance and technical support with clients and project teams to identify and mitigate risks, ensure compliance with all statutory, legal, and planning requirements. Ensuring all design outputs meet project BIM requirements Performing reviews of technical proposals and deliverables. Maintaining awareness of SHE hazards and associated risks Review and management of design programmes, monitoring and reporting via programme updates, trackers & progress meetings Preparing, executing and monitoring the information delivery plan. Identifying opportunities and working with project teams, design consultants and supply chain partners to improve the design by considering how to improve safety, enhance buildability, improve quality, and provide best value compliant solutions. Co-ordinating the whole design process, proactively managing design interfaces, risk, change and technical output Organising and chairing design co-ordination and design progress meetings with the design team and supply chain Contributing to the setting up of the project common data environment, and record, distribute, process, and monitor all design activities. Assisting the commercial team assistants with cost monitoring, forecasting, and review of payment applications Assisting commercial and technical leads in the production and review of design briefs, requests for quotations Assisting and liaising with the project temporary works coordinator to ensure temporary works considerations are accounted for within designs Who are we looking for? Degree qualification in civil engineering or equivalent. Professionally qualified, preferably a Chartered Engineer. A wide and varied experience of the construction process through concept and detailed design to the construction phase and handover, and understanding of the planning, management and technical skills necessary to undertake the role. Experience in design and/or engineering management of civil engineering infrastructure and buildings, with knowledge of the work process in design offices through successful experience of design delivery coordination, ideally including MEP, Fire and Security, MEICA etc. Excellent communication skills, both at the personal level and more formal reporting. The role will require a can-do and collaborative approach, coupled with strong leadership and management skills. Enthusiastic team player, able to listen, understand, engage and motivate, and with confidence to make decisions when required. A desire to constantly learn, improve and share knowledge and experience. Knowledge of design procedures and standards. Ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment. A good commercial understanding of contracts, procurement routes and risk management. Promote the use of 3D modelling workflows and BIM, including facilitating design reviews using model-based tools. Ability to interrogate digital design models, manage coordination, raise issues to contribute towards the generation of clash reports for improved quality, safety, and reduced rework, supported by the project BIM Manager. Practical experience of harmonising design and quality requirements with buildability and programme requirements, and a strong desire to problem solve, are essential. Whats in it for you?
