Job Description POSITION SUMMARY The CNC Machinist is one of Savage’s primary functions in production. CNC Machinists are responsible for production of parts per customers specifications. The responsibilities include setting up and running CNC equipment to produce high-quality machined parts. The CNC Machinist must pay attention to detail, be proficient in reading drawings and interpreting specifications and follow router instructions. CNC Machinists are responsible for the production and acceptance by quality parts that meet customer requirements and all spec’s associated with that individual part. CNC Machinists are also responsible for ensuring that CNC equipment is run at high utilization rates (machine running as much as possible during work hours), that work areas are maintained in a clean and safe condition, and that waste/rework due to machinist error is minimized. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS · The CNC Machinist report to the CNC Department Lead. · The CNC Machinist coordinates with CNC Department Lead and/or the Production Manager to determine daily work schedules and goals · Other reporting relationships may be established on a project-specific basis. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Machine setup and Operation: · Work with Production Manager or Team Lead to establish priorities and production goals each day, as practical. · Set up CNC Machines, including loading necessary tools, fixtures, and materials. · Program CNC Machines using appropriate CAM software based on engineering drawings, specifications, and customer guidelines. · Operate CNC Machines to perform machining operations such as milling, drilling, and turning. · Monitor machine operations to ensure proper functioning and make all adjustments as necessary to ensure tolerances and specifications are met per customer needs. · Notify team leader of any discrepancies or issues with jobs or specifications. · Often, CNC Machinists will be expected to run jobs on multiple machines simultaneously. · Savage also operates several manual lathes and mills, which CNC Machinists also need to be proficient with for secondary operations on some jobs. Quality Control · Inspect stock supplied for the job that it meets print and router specifications and is not marred in any way that would inhibit machining strategies. · Visually inspect parts for accuracy, quality, and visual acceptance after machining activities. · Parts given to quality for WIP quality checks as required by the Work Order will be clean and deburred . · Make necessary adjustments to machine settings to maintain tolerances and meet quality standards. · Minimize waste and manage CNC operations in a safe manner Maintenance and Repair · Perform routine maintenance on CNC machines to ensure optimal performance · Report any machine malfunctions or machine stoppage problems with CNC lead. · Coordinate with CNC lead for repairs and servicing as needed Documentation and Reporting: · Maintain accurate records of production activities, including machine setup sheets, tooling logs, and inspection reports. · Follow established standards and protocols for naming and maintaining machine run programs. Safety and Compliance: · Adhere to all safety requirements and protocols to ensure a safe working environment · Wear all appropriate PPE as required while on shop floor and any other areas where PPE is required. · Follow established guidelines for handling materials including any and all production materials that may cause injury from handling. · Follow established safety protocols for operating CNC machinery and any other machines for production. · Report any deviations from specifications or quality issues to supervisors or leadership team · Maintain a clean work area. COMPETENCIES REQUIRED · Exceptional knowledge and ability to use software programs for CNC Machines and production of machined parts. · Exceptional ability to use measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, edge finders, and others to measure parts and tolerances to customer specifications. · Exceptional ability to read and understand drawings, mylars, tolerances, specifications, and special customer requests. · Exceptional problem solving abilities in the diagnosis of production issues and mitigating strategies. · Exceptional communication skills across all disciplines to effectively create production parts from start to final production. · Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage production parts for customer schedules. · Strong sense of urgency in communicating with all levels for materials, packaging and shipping of product and customer service. · Strong written and verbal communication skills. · Strong math skills. REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND EDUCATION · Valid driver’s license. · High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. · Certification in CAM programming is preferred. PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS · Efficiency (estimated time vs actual time) · Scrap Rate / Rework · Timekeeping – Based on Job allotment. WORKING CONDITIONS CNC Machinists will spend most of their time working in a shop environment at their assigned equipment. They must be able to sit and/or stand at assigned workstations for several hours at a time. CNC Machinists must have the strength/dexterity be able to reach/lift to manually load equipment and to retrieve finished parts after processes are complete. All shop personnel must wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) when at their work area or other shop floor areas. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS Authorized to work in the United States.
