Job Description The Construction Specialist serves as a hands-on field leader who combines sub-project management with the ability to self-perform work across multiple trades. This role focuses on carpentry, HVAC, refrigeration, earthwork, and concrete, while maintaining a versatile, team-oriented approach. The specialist supports project success through proactive planning, quality workmanship, safety leadership, and effective coordination with crews, subcontractors, designers, and clients. Key Responsibilities · Sub-Project Management o Plan, organize, and oversee small to mid-size sub-projects within the broader construction effort. o Develop look-ahead schedules, track progress, identify risks, and communicate status to the Project Manager. o Manage resources, subcontractors, equipment, and materials to meet schedule and budget targets. o Prepare and process change orders, RFI responses, and field decisions in collaboration with the PM. o Ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, codes, and QA/QC standards. · Self-Performance of Work o Self-perform hands-on tasks in at least two of the following disciplines: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, refrigeration, earthwork, and concrete. o Demonstrate proficiency in installing, repairing, and finishing within your trade scope per drawings and specs. o Apply best practices for craftsmanship, sequencing, and safety to achieve high-quality results. · Field Operations and Leadership o Lead and supervise field crews; assign tasks, monitor performance, and mentor junior team members. o Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, and design professionals to resolve field issues. o Maintain a clean, organized, and safe worksite; lead toolbox talks and enforce safety policies. o Conduct inspections, perform quality checks, and address punch-list items promptly. · Technical and Documentation o Read and interpret plans, specifications, shop drawings, and BIM/3D models as applicable. o Maintain accurate field records: daily reports, photos, as-built drawings, and progress metrics. o Verify material availability, manage inventory, and ensure proper handling and storage. o Support commissioning, testing, and start-up activities as required. · Compliance and Safety o Promote a safety-first culture; enforce OSHA/EH&S guidelines and company safety standards. o Identify hazards, implement controls, and participate in safety audits and incident investigations. · Communication and Collaboration o Maintain open, proactive communication with the PM, design team, and client when applicable. o Resolve conflicts, provide technical guidance, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. Qualifications · Experience: Minimum 5–7 years of field construction experience; proven ability to manage sub-projects and self-perform trades across carpentry, HVAC, refrigeration, earthwork, or concrete. Cross-disciplinary experience is strongly preferred. · Education: High school diploma or GED required. Technical/trade school diploma or equivalent certification highly desirable. · Skills: Strong reading of plans and specifications; ability to use field software (PlanGrid, Procore, MS Project, or equivalent); basic math and measurement skills; proficient problem-solving and decision-making. · Licenses/Certifications (preferred but not required for all): o OSHA 10/30, fall protection, and other standard safety certifications. o HVAC/R experience, EPA Refrigerant Handling Certification (EPA 608) for refrigeration/HVAC work. o Carpentry-related certifications or recognized experience o Equipment operator certifications (e.g., concrete cutting, skid steer, excavator) o Concrete finishing certifications (ACI or equivalent) or documented experience o Demonstrated experience in trade work o Commercial driver's license Physical and Other Requirements · Physical ability to perform field tasks, lift heavy materials, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. · Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. · Willingness to travel to multiple job sites as needed. Work Environment · Primarily field-based with some periods of office work for planning and reporting. · Exposure to construction hazards; adherence to safety protocols is essential. · Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team including tradespeople, subcontractors, designers, and clients. Performance Metrics (KPIs) · Schedule adherence for sub-project milestones. · Quality of workmanship and reduction of punch-list items. · Safety record and adherence to safety standards. · Budget stewardship and efficiency of material usage. · Effective communication and stakeholder satisfaction.
