Essential Functions: • Acquire and maintain knowledge of all laws and regulations pertaining to veterans benefits through regular review of the Code of Federal Regulations and other publications and, where appropriate, decisions of the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims., • Learn how to conduct detailed interviews of veterans to elicit information so that all potential benefits can be identified., • Review service records and other pertinent data, including medical records, to identify and/or assess validity of claims and potential claims., • Learn to determine whether additional evidence may be needed to support a particular claim; provide advice to veteran concerning same., • Learn to determine the risks and benefits of filing a particular claim., • Learn to assess whether the evidentiary support available for a given claim meets the requirements of 38 CFR § 14.633, which incorporates the rule on “frivolous claims” as adopted by the American Bar Association in Model Rule 3.1., • Practice preparing all submissions required to initiate and advance the claim, including, without limitation, briefs and similar documents analyzing the application of appropriate regulations to the facts of a given case., • Practice monitoring the progress of a claim from submission to resolution, dealing with VA adjudicators as required to advance the claim and keeping the claimant advised of significant developments., • Learn to advise the claimant, where appropriate, of administrative and judicial appeal options for claims denied in whole or part and, when requested, provide the claimant with specific advice concerning likely bases of appeal (if any)., • Practice representing claimants before military and VA hearing panels and boards, presenting evidence and legal argument and, as necessary, examining and cross-examining witnesses., • Learn to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish clientele workload., • Communicate professionally and diplomatically with people inside/outside the organization., • Learn to recruit new DAV members to further support and enhance DAV’s mission of service., • Perform other administrative and outreach activities as directed by the office Supervisor. POSITION SUMMARY: The Next Step Resource and Recovery Center opportunities for people in all stages and forms of recovery to deliver and attend individual and group support activities, initiate, and conduct outreach, and events celebrating recovery and reducing stigma associated with substance use. The Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and hosts several services including Recovery Center peer-driven individual and group recovery services, counseling and case management, overdose prevention services, harm reduction, and recovery-oriented community outreach, education, and the Training Institute at CHASI. The Recovery Counselor serves as a key clinical member of the Next Step team, providing substance use disorder assessments, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, treatment planning, and recovery support services to participants. The Recovery Counselor works collaboratively with Senior Peer Mentors, and community partners to support participant engagement and continuity of care. Seeking to reduce crime and incarceration and increase public trust in justice, the Midtown Community Justice Center works with neighborhood stakeholders to improve Midtown Manhattan, and to serve the vibrant Midtown community, specifically those in need of services. The court responds creatively to low-level offending, seeking sentences that are restorative to the victim, defendant, and community. Further, the Midtown staff engages in ongoing community engagement events to promote community wellness and to help connect people, in need, to voluntary services. The Midtown Community Justice Center is seeking a Program Manager to oversee the Youth P.A.C.T (Positively Advancing in Community Together), a citywide diversion program for teenagers arrested for gun possession. Youth P.A.C.T aims to address the root causes of gun carrying and violence identify supportive and protective factors for its young participants. The program provides a forum for young people and their loved ones to improve mutual understanding and communication, while facilitating connections to critical community-based resources. Using a restorative justice framework, the program includes two components over roughly 12 weeks: One-on-one sessions and restorative circles. Reporting to MCJC’s Project Director and CJI’s Senior Program Manager for Restorative Practices, the Program Manager's responsibilities will include program administration and coordination, iterating on the Youth P.A.C.T program model in collaboration with team members, supervising a Restorative Case Manager, providing case management services to young people and families, facilitating restorative justice processes, and liaising with the Law Department, Family Court, other CJI sites, and community stakeholders. The program provides meaningful engagement between arrest and arraignment to individuals in the Bronx issued a Desk Appearance Ticket (DAT) for possession of a controlled substance. This is an innovative, new effort to be smarter about policing and prosecuting addiction by responding to low-level possessions of controlled substances –especially opioids – with harm-reduction alternatives to conventional court proceedings that rely on jail or the threat of jail as the corrective measure. Bronx Community Solutions is seeking a Peer Supervisor, Bronx HOPE to provide supervision to the daily dispatch operations of the HOPE Program and to the team of Peer Specialists. The Peer Supervisor will assist with training, scheduling and dispatch operations to police precincts within established timeframes. Additionally, the Supervisor will manage all assessed individuals who are arrested for the possession and/or use of controlled substance and link them with appropriate services such as recovery support, harm reduction services, mental health care, crisis intervention, and more. A team of 40 social workers, case managers, resource coordinators, peer specialists, and restorative justice practitioners, Manhattan Justice is a court-based assessment, resource, and referral hub that provides judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys at New York County Criminal Court and Supreme Court with social service-based sentencing options for misdemeanor and felony cases. The program serves around 2,000 court-mandated participants annually. Manhattan Justice offers onsite case management, psycho-educational groups, and restorative justice programming, and provides referrals to community-based service providers for mental health, substance use, employment, primary health care services and more. These services, which are open to anyone who needs them—including mandated participants’ families and friends, and others affected by the criminal justice system—help people address underlying issues in their lives, build stability, and decrease their likelihood of further justice involvement. The core components of Manhattan Justice’s work are a short-term alternative sentencing program for people charged with misdemeanors and unindicted felonies and a long-term and intensive alternative sentencing program for people charged with felonies. The latter initiative is a partnership with the Manhattan Felony Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) Court, for which Manhattan Justice provides assessment, treatment planning, case managing, and compliance monitoring services. Responsibilities for Litigation Support Paralegal: • Prepare and electronically file pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and other court documents in state and federal courts, • Support attorneys with discovery, trial preparation, exhibits, and overall case management, • Conduct legal and factual research using Westlaw, LexisNexis, PACER, and other court-related websites, • Manage large-scale document productions and case data using litigation support platforms such as Relativity, • Cite-check, proofread, and fact-check briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents, • Maintain accurate and well-organized case files in accordance with firm standards, • Assist with mentoring and supporting junior paralegals, as appropriate Qualifications for Litigation Support Paralegal: • Bachelor’s degree with +2 years of litigation paralegal experience, • Strong knowledge of New York state and federal court rules and procedures, • Proficiency with litigation databases, electronic filing systems, and Microsoft Office, • Excellent organizational, research, and communication skills with strong attention to detail, • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment Powered by JazzHR RoMYy44Go2
