Job Description Hamilton-Madison House is a nonprofit settlement house dedicated to improving the quality of life of its community, primarily the Two Bridges/Chinatown area of Manhattan's Lower East Side. The House provides a wide range of programs and services designed to enhance the quality of life for all residents of the Two Bridges/Chinatown area and throughout New York City’s five boroughs, including childcare, youth development, senior services, behavioral health, and immigrant and community services. The primary role of the Accounting Specialist is to support the Finance staff in managing day to day financial transactions, budgeting and reporting. Responsibilities: • The Accounting Specialist is responsible for providing accounting support for Hamilton-Madison House’s government contracts, including budgets, financial reporting, preparing vouchers and justifying expenses for drawdowns, • The Accountant will also assist with the monthly close process, financial reporting, collaborate with colleagues of the Finance Department regularly, pitch-in for colleagues as needed, and provide excellent support to staff across the organization., • This role reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and requires a high level of accountability and responsibility., • Process HMH bi-weekly payroll and other payroll related duties as assigned by the CFO, • Responsible for recording and processing Accounts Receivable, daily banking transactions, • Assist with updating Accounts Payable, cut checks and issue other payments, as necessary, • Assist with monthly closing of the books and with general entry, • Assist with preparation of financial statements (monthly, quarterly and annual) and supporting schedules, • Assist with the preparation of financial reports for submission to funding sources as needed, • Support financial analysis and compliance with internal policies and procedures consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”)., • This role requires great attention to detail, a strong ability to multi-task and work independently, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines., • 2-3 years of relevant work experience, preferably within the finance department of a nonprofit organization, • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, • Excellent financial analysis skills, • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; advanced Excel skills are required, • Highly organized and detail oriented; able to plan, manage and successfully complete multiple concurrent projects with deadlines.
