Job Description Job Title: Cook Location: SouthEast Seattle Senior Center Reports To: Executive Director Employment Type: Part-Time/30 Hours Supervises: Volunteers (as assigned) Position Summary The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals for Community Dining and Mobile Lunch programs, maintains a clean and safe kitchen environment, and supports basic administrative tasks necessary for daily food service operations. The position helps ensure that the kitchen runs efficiently, safely, and in alignment with center policies and program goals. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Food Preparation & Service 1. Prepare and portion meals according to established menus and food safety guidelines. 2. Complete necessary prep work for upcoming meal service, including batch cooking and ingredient preparation. 3. Inspect food during preparation for proper quantity, quality, and safe handling., 4. Follow all food safety, sanitation, and hygiene procedures. Kitchen Operations & Sanitation 5. Maintain a clean and safe kitchen, including daily cleaning of equipment, tools, counters, and food storage areas. 6. Ensure compliance with sanitation standards and report safety hazards promptly., 7. Assist with inventory rotation, labeling, and storage following food safety standards. Purchasing & Supply Support 8. Shop for weekly menu ingredients within budget guidelines., 9. Pick up food donations as needed and ensure proper storage., 10. Track kitchen supplies and report when orders or replacements are necessary. Reviewed and updated February 2026 Administrative & Program Support 11. Assist with volunteer coordination for kitchen tasks., 12. Support nutrition education activities, surveys, and distribution of materials when needed. 13. Assist with simple administrative tasks, including maintaining basic food production records. 14. Follow proper cash-handling and receipt documentation procedures when assigned. 15. Participate in required meetings, organizational activities, and trainings. Professional & Organizational Expectations 16. QUALIFICATIONS Education & Experience • High School Diploma or equivalent required., • Valid Washington State Food Handler’s Permit., • At least two (2) years of experience in a commercial kitchen, food service program, or equivalent culinary setting preparing menus, cooking, and some administrative tasks. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities • Understanding of large-scale food preparation and safe food handling., • Ability to follow standardized recipes, estimate quantities, and adjust portion sizes., • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain cleanliness and safety standards. Reviewed and updated February 2026 • Excellent customer service and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively., • Basic computer skills; ability to use email and simple online tools as needed (e.g., Microsoft Office, Teams, Zoom). • Ability to multitask and manage time effectively in a busy kitchen environment., • Ability and willingness to learn new systems, processes, and technologies. Additional Requirements • Completion of a Criminal History Background Check and Self-Disclosure Form. LANGUAGE SKILLS • Ability to read and interpret basic instructions, safety materials, and program documents. • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and participants, including individuals who may be hard of hearing. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS • Ability to perform basic math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages) for recipe scaling and inventory. PHYSICAL DEMANDS • Stand for long periods; walk, bend, reach, and lift up to 40 pounds regularly., • Perform repetitive hand and arm movements., • Work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions. WORK ENVIRONMENT • Work is performed in a commercial kitchen/food production setting., • Exposure to heat, cold, steam, loud noise, cleaning chemicals, and strong food odors is common. • Must always follow safety precautions.
