Job DescriptionHR Generalist (Government Contracting / DoD Experience) Duration: 6-month Contract-To-Hire Location: Madison Heights, MI Rate: $25-30/hour LHH Recruitment is seeking an HR Generalist to support day-to-day HR operations with one of our clients within a government contracting / defense environment. This role partners closely with leadership, Talent Acquisition, Security/Compliance, Finance/Payroll, and Program teams to ensure consistent HR service delivery, strong employee experience, and adherence to company policies and applicable federal contracting requirements. The ideal candidate is hands-on, highly organized, and comfortable balancing employee relations, HR administration, onboarding, compliance, and process improvement-while operating with discretion and a service mindset. Government contracting or DoD experience is a requirement for this person to be successful. Key Responsibilities Employee Relations & HR Support • Serve as the first point of contact for employee HR questions (policies, benefits, leave, performance, workplace concerns) and provide guidance aligned to company policy and applicable laws., • Support employee relations matters including documentation, investigations support, corrective action processes, and exit/retention conversations., • Maintain strict confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive employee matters.Onboarding, Offboarding & Workforce Administration, • Coordinate onboarding and offboarding processes, including orientation, policy acknowledgements, required trainings, and systems access coordination., • Maintain accurate employee records (personnel files, I-9, training records, acknowledgements) and ensure audit-ready documentation practices., • Support HRIS data integrity (new hires, job changes, terminations, reporting, and routine audits).Compliance & Government-Contracting HR Requirements, • Support compliance activities tied to federal contracting obligations such as employment eligibility verification / E-Verify processes when required by contract flowdowns., • Assist in administering labor compliance practices that may apply to covered contracts (e.g., ensuring proper documentation, employee notification/postings, recordkeeping, and accurate classification support for positions subject to Service Contract Act wage determinations, where applicable)., • Coordinate required employee training and policy acknowledgements relevant to the defense environment (e.g., cybersecurity/CUI awareness, export compliance, code of conduct), partnering with Compliance/Security teams as needed. [acquisition.gov] Performance Management & Talent Processes, • Support performance management cycles (goal setting, check-ins, documentation, and annual review logistics)., • Assist managers with job description maintenance, compensation change workflows, and internal mobility documentation., • Partner with Talent Acquisition on requisition setup, onboarding execution, and hiring process consistency.Benefits, Leave, and Payroll Support, • Support benefits administration and employee support (open enrollment coordination, qualifying events, vendor escalations)., • Coordinate leave administration support (FMLA/ADA interactive process support, sick leave, PTO guidance) in partnership with leadership and vendors as applicable., • Liaise with payroll/finance to support accurate employee data changes, timekeeping compliance reminders, and issue resolution.Process Improvement & Reporting, • Track HR metrics (turnover, onboarding status, training completion, headcount reporting) and support reporting requests., • Identify opportunities to streamline HR workflows, improve employee experience, and strengthen compliance readiness.Qualifications Required • 3+ years of experience in an HR Generalist, HR Operations, or HR Coordinator role with broad HR exposure (employee relations, onboarding, HR administration, benefits/leave support)., • Working knowledge of core HR compliance fundamentals (I-9, record retention, basic employment law concepts)., • Strong documentation skills and ability to manage sensitive matters with discretion., • Proficiency with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); ability to run reports and maintain data integrity., • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Preferred (Highly Relevant in DoD / GovCon), • Experience supporting a government contractor or regulated environment (aerospace/defense, manufacturing, engineering, federal services)., • Familiarity with E-Verify obligations and related onboarding workflows in federal contracting settings., • Exposure to SCA (Service Contract Act) or prevailing wage compliance concepts (wage determinations, postings, recordkeeping), where applicable., • Experience supporting security or compliance coordination in a cleared/regulated environment (e.g., training compliance, badge/access workflows)., • Understanding of the importance of safeguarding sensitive information and supporting workforce training requirements tied to defense contracts.
