Job Description SERC OVERVIEW: SERC Reliability Corporation (SERC) is one of six Regional Entities in North America authorized by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) through delegation agreements with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). SERC is responsible for promoting the reliability and security of the bulk power system across the southeastern and central United States. SERC's footprint spans approximately 630,000 square miles and serves more than 97 million people, including all or portions of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. To support this mission, SERC maintains a multidisciplinary team of experts and works closely with industry stakeholders, neighboring Regional Entities, NERC, and federal partners. These partnerships enable informed, pragmatic, and impactful approaches to emerging and evolving reliability challenges. POSITION SUMMARY: The Reliability Assessment and Regional Risk team is part of SERC's Reliability Assessment, Performance Analysis, and Technical Services (RAPA) Department. The team evaluates power system reliability, identifies emerging risks, and develops regional reliability assessments to support the resilience of the bulk power system. The Reliability Engineer supports and advances SERC's reliability assessment processes by analyzing data, conducting technical assessments, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. This role contributes technical expertise to regional reliability assessments, supports stakeholder outreach and training, and assists in identifying trends and risks affecting the SERC footprint. The position works under general direction while applying sound engineering judgment and developing professional independence. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Support regional transmission and resource adequacy assessments, including analysis of steady-state, stability, short-circuit, deterministic, and probabilistic study results., • Analyze data to identify potential reliability risks and emerging trends affecting the SERC footprint., • Support facilitation of SERC technical committees and working groups; represent SERC on select ERO initiatives, working groups, and task forces., • Apply project management and process improvement practices to support the efficiency and effectiveness of SERC's reliability assessment activities., • Collaborate with stakeholders to support the development and review of models, methods, and scenarios addressing known and emerging reliability risks., • Support internal regional analyses, data validation, and documentation efforts across SERC., • Assist in communications with stakeholders, NERC, and neighboring Regional Entities on planning and operational topics., • Coordinate with neighboring Regional Entities to support modeling alignment and information sharing., • Ensure proper data handling, retention, and confidentiality in accordance with SERC policies and procedures., • Support SERC's reliability risk management program by assisting in identifying, analyzing, and communicating risks and trends., • Contribute to technical reports, presentations, and stakeholder communications., • Support stakeholder outreach and training activities as needed., • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field. Master's degree or Power systems focus is preferred., • Minimum five (5) years of electric utility industry experience in transmission planning and policy is required., • Some experience in operations, planning, and/or regulatory activities, particularly with exposure to NERC and FERC., • Strong written and oral expression and comprehension with the ability to make concise summaries of issues and discussions to support improvement strategies., • Experience supporting program or project management activities preferred., • Working knowledge of the electric utility industry, including transmission planning, resource planning, and power system modeling concepts., • Working knowledge of NERC Reliability Standards and the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) framework., • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications for analysis, documentation, and reporting., • Experience with industry-standard tools such as PSSE, TARA, SERVM, or similar platforms preferred., • Demonstrated analytical reasoning skills to evaluate technical information and support sound conclusions., • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, management, and external stakeholders., • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities., • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to summarize technical issues clearly., • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to support conflict resolution in collaborative environments.
