Job Description VETERINARY TECHNICIAN (CVT) JOB DESCRIPTION: Veterinary Technicians (CVTs) play a critical role in delivering high-quality medical care, supporting veterinarians, and advocating for patients and clients. This position with Caring Ways Veterinary Clinic combines advanced technical skill, clinical judgment, and compassionate care. CVTs are responsible for performing medical procedures within their scope of practice, ensuring patient safety, educating clients, and contributing to efficient clinic operations. REPORTS TO: Andrea Hilden, DVM Founder and Owner of Caring Ways Veterinary Clinic CLASSIFICATION: FULL-TIME DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Patient Care & Medical Support • Independently conduct technician-led appointments and outpatient services that do not require direct veterinarian involvement, including anal gland expressions, outpatient injections, diagnostic sample collection, and complex nail trims, as permitted by state law, while assessing patients and assessing cases appropriately to determine when veterinary involvement is indicated, • Assist veterinarians during examinations, treatments, and procedures, • Safely and compassionately restrain patients for exams, diagnostics, and procedures, • Place and maintain intravenous catheters and administer IV fluids, • Monitor hospitalized, surgical, and anesthetized patients and promptly report changes in condition, • Induce, monitor, and recover patients from anesthesia under veterinary supervision, • Perform dental prophylaxis including scaling, polishing, and dental radiographs, • Perform diagnostic procedures such as blood draws, urinalysis, fecal exams, cytology, ECGs, and radiographs, • Provide nursing care including wound care, bandaging, feeding, bathing, and comfort measures, • Follow and uphold patient, staff, and client safety standards, including anesthesia monitoring, infection control, and safe handling protocols Facility & Operational Support • Prepare examination rooms, treatment areas, and surgical suites to ensure readiness and sterility, • Maintain cleanliness and organization of treatment areas, equipment, and supplies, • Properly clean, disinfect, and maintain medical equipment and instruments, • Assist with inventory management of medical supplies, medications, and controlled substances, • Follow established protocols for safety, infection control, and patient handling Client Service & Communication • Lead client education on preventive care, treatment plans, medications, and home care, including ongoing management and monitoring for patients with complex or chronic medical conditions, within scope of practice, • Answer client questions accurately and professionally within scope of practice, • Triage client concerns in person and by phone, determining urgency and assessing when to involve veterinarian, • Serve as a primary point of contact for technician-led appointments and follow-up communication, • Enter and update accurate client and patient information in the practice management system Documentation & Records • Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely medical records, • Ensure all treatments, diagnostics, and communications are properly documented Additional Responsibilities • Maintain positive, respectful, and cooperative relationships with team members, • Serve as a clinical resource and support to veterinary assistants and newer staff, • Participate in continuing education and training opportunities REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES Professional Competencies • Acts with integrity, professionalism, and ethical judgment, • Exercises sound clinical judgment and decision-making within scope of practice and established protocols Technical & Operational Skills • Demonstrates consistent adherence to safety protocols, including radiation safety, anesthesia safety, sharps handling, and controlled substance procedures REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION Required • Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, or RVT per state regulations), • Active credential in good standing within the state of employment Preferred • Graduate of an accredited veterinary technology program, • 2+ years of experience as a credentialed veterinary technician PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, and lifting, • Ability to lift and restrain animals up to 50 pounds, • Exposure to animals, allergens, noise, unpleasant odors, and animal waste, • Potential exposure to chemicals, medications, anesthetic gases, and radiation used in veterinary care PERFORMANCE METRICS • Quality of patient care and medical outcomes, • Adherence to medical protocols and patient safety standards, • Operational efficiency and teamwork SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION This position is available as full-time. Full-time is generally 32-40 hours per week and may include evenings and weekends to meet patient and client care needs, with additional compensation for evenings and weekends. Hourly Range: $21 – $24, plus benefits, commensurate with experience.
