Job Description JOB SUMMARY: Assists with planning, organizing, administering, and evaluating of nursing services. Responsible for assuring the maintenance of quality service that will meet the total needs of the resident. Provide pre-service and in-service education programs. Responsible for infection control policies and procedures; acts as facility infection control nurse; responsible for resident plan of care; assumes responsibility of Director of Nursing as necessary. Responsible to assess the training needs of staff and to develop, implement, evaluate and document a total staff development program including Job Specific Orientation, In-Service, and Continuing Education Programs for all personnel. Plans and conducts orientation and training program for non-professional nursing personnel seeking certification as state tested/certified nursing assistants, if applicable. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned.) • Makes daily rounds as designated by Director of Nursing on all residents to observe the quality of nursing services and patient care being rendered. Confers with charge nurse and assists with problems as necessary., • Assures that nursing practice standards are high and consistent with standards of professional practice., • Evaluates nursing personnel including counseling, disciplinary action and recommendation for termination when necessary and/or salary increase when feasible., • Responsible for solving problems and handling emergencies as they arise in nursing in the absence of the Director of Nursing., • Responsible for skills assessment and continuing in-service education for nursing personnel; will develop an in-service calendar for the year to include in-services mandated., • Interacts with residents, families, and responsible parties., • Assumes responsibility for infection control program, reporting and in-service., • Participates in developing, implementing and maintaining policies and procedures concerning nursing care and educational programs for nursing staff., • Supervises the activities of subordinates as required., • Assists in planning and budgeting of labor, supplies, and materials for nursing care and educational programs., • Assists with staffing and schedules as necessary., • Assumes other responsibilities as deemed necessary by Director of Nursing., • Rotates call with the Director of Nursing., • May have to work the floor in a charge nurse position, if the situation arises., • Participates in QA committee. Performs quality indicator audits., • Assures that established infection control and universal precautions are maintained when performing duties., • Develops, implements and maintains a written annual staff development plan which ensures a coordinated program for staff education for all personnel., • Coordinates with each department leader a job specific orientation checklist to familiarize and train new hires to the expectations of the job., • Acts as a preceptor, coach, and resource person in part to help new employees get through their job specific orientation., • Assists in planning coordinating and conducting all required in-service programs and/or special training sessions in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws and/or corporate requirements., • Conducts periodic needs assessment to identify the learning needs of staff and assists in counseling employees concerning those identified needs., • Develops and maintains a record keeping system to document employee attendance, completion of orientation, and all required in-service education programs; provides copies of all appropriate documentation for each employee's personnel file., • Assists in planning, coordinating, and conducting all required training to assure compliance with quality improvement programs in conjunction with all departments., • Assists in development of an annual budget that will provide necessary resources to achieve program objectives and cost efficiencies, as requested., • Assists with demonstrations to acquaint staff with new equipment and to review existing equipment., • Trains nursing assistant incumbents using approved nurse aid training programs and practical example., • Demonstrates proper way to bathe, feed, and transfer residents, including all ADL's., • Performs other duties as assigned. WORK ENVIRONMENT: • Works in well-lighted/ventilated areas, as well as throughout the facility., • Subject to frequent interruptions., • Subject to emotionally upset residents, family members, etc., • May be subject to falls, burns, and odors throughout the workday., • May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions etc including exposure to the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses., • Involved with residents, staff and visitors under all conditions and circumstances. REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES: • Must possess an associate degree of Nursing or have a baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited college. Must have a minimum of two (2) years of additional clinical experience in geriatric or rehabilitation nursing. Also, must have an additional two (2) years of supervisory or administrative experience., • Must hold a current Florida license., • Two years of teaching experience; demonstrated ability and presentation experience in training of adults and group dynamics., • Must have a current CPR card., • Must have a genuine interest in geriatric care., • Must believe in and uphold the philosophy of the facility. Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability., • Must possess knowledge of and a commitment to the standards of long term care, knowledge and understanding of State and Federal Regulations and a good knowledge of the Survey process., • Must be able to demonstrate evidence of having baseline proficiency in the following competencies: Team building, problem solving, resident care and service focus, staff development, orientation presentation, interpersonal understanding, support building/persuasion, information seeking and performance management., • Must have a high degree of independent decision making ability and a high degree of personal accountability and responsibility., • Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner., • Must be able to sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently throughout the workday., • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability., • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position., • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, and emotionally upset people., • Assume the responsibility for maintaining professional competence through participation in programs/seminars/training., • Willing to work beyond the normal working hours, on weekends, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary., • Ability to handle department equipment according to standard procedures., • Must possess sight and hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met., • Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, tact, and the ability to work effectively with residents, staff, and visitors., • Report all accidents and incidents to supervisor no matter how minor they may be., • Attends and participates in inservice classes, on-the-job programs, etc. as scheduled and directed., • Honor the Residents’ Rights polices at all times., • Maintain confidentiality of all resident information., • Be expected (and required) to perform any task in a safe, sanitary and efficient manner in accordance with established procedures., • Follow facility safety program., • Assume accountability for data contained in the Employee Handbook., • Any exposure to blood or body fluids that contain visible blood must be reported to supervisor on the shift in which the incident occurs., • Be familiar with universal precautions (i.e. frequent hand washing, using gloves, etc.)., • Understand that this position contains Category I tasks that may involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues., • Ability to understand and use universal precautions and appropriate protective measures, which are readily available to every employee, engaged in Category I tasks., • Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
