Job Description Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, giving the brightest, most interesting and creative people on the internet the power of their own publishing platform. Substack’s model, based on direct subscriptions, has fueled an explosion of We are looking for a Product Designer with experience and interest in video. As creatives of many varieties —writers, cooks, musicians, journalists, and everyone else— increasingly make use of video formats, Substack has introduced Live video, video podcast features, and video support across many surfaces. These have led to increased earnings for creatives, increased collaboration between creatives, and better launches for new arrivals to the platform, among other things, and we intend to continue investing in this area. An excellent candidate will have experience working on video products (e.g. players, production flows, editing interfaces, or the like) and/or on video itself, perhaps with a background in motion or animation design. This team tackles everything from “editing experiences” to “automatic LLM-based clip-making” to “captioning” to “formats” to “collaborative flows” to “watching experiences” and so on. Someone with existing thoughts on video and production will likely have more success pushing the state of the platform forward. You can expect to work on a very wide range of video features as the sole designer in the area, and possible on non-video features too: it’s imaginable that audio formats become part of the play here, for example. Design at Substack Experienced designers know that commercial and economic realities shape the possibility spaces of product strategy. If success for a company means “selling more ads,” designers may achieve a lovely user interface or ideal typography, but everything will be in service of producing the same strange, often-nightmarish dynamics we all know from the many scaled platforms of the past decade. Substack does not have silver bullets for the problems of human nature, and we will not avoid the costs of creating scaled platforms. But we do have a different model, one in which we make money only when creatives of all kinds earn money from audiences who value them enough to consistently pay them. Crucially, in this model, all scales are reduced: one needs thousands, not millions, of fans, and this difference alone changes the dynamics of the platform, and thus what’s possible with e.g. product architecture. As fundamental, though, is the level of trust and interest involved in paid subscriptions. “What works” for Substack is what leads people to make long-term and real investments in independent creatives and collectives, and we hope this will lead to improved outcomes in aggregate across many types of features. This is a foundational role for Oura; as our first dedicated hire for supply chain sustainability, you'll have the unique opportunity to build and lead this critical function from the ground up. You will be instrumental in identifying, developing, and implementing strategies that drastically reduce our ecological footprint, drive resource efficiency, and ensure responsible practices from component sourcing through end-of-life, championing adoption both internally and externally. You'll work cross-functionally with R&D, Product, Manufacturing Engineering, Logistics, Customer Experience, and Legal teams, as well as our external manufacturing and logistics partners, to achieve ambitious sustainability targets. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, project management capabilities, and a passion for environmental stewardship, all aimed at building a more sustainable future for Oura and our planet. This is a US Hybrid (3 days per week) role based in our San Francisco, California office. What you will do: • Pioneer Oura's Supply Chain Sustainability Program: As the first dedicated expert, you will design, implement, and lead Oura's environmental sustainability strategy across the entire supply chain and product lifecycle. You'll ensure alignment with overarching corporate goals and drive its widespread adoption internally and externally with partners., • Logistics & Freight Optimization: Partner with logistics to identify and implement initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of inbound and outbound logistics and freight, exploring modes like ocean freight optimization, sustainable fuels, and route efficiencies., • Circular Economy & Waste Management:, • Customer Returns & E-waste: Develop and manage programs for responsible handling of customer returns, product refurbishment, and end-of-life management, including e-waste recycling and circularity initiatives. You'll establish new processes for the company in these areas., • Manufacturing & Assembly Waste: Drive programs to minimize waste generation (e.g., plastics, metals, hazardous materials) within manufacturing processes and assembly operations at our Contract Manufacturers (CMs), promoting recycling and waste-to-resource solutions., • Manufacturing Energy Efficiency: Collaborate with CMs to assess and improve energy efficiency in their facilities, identifying opportunities for renewable energy adoption and reduced consumption related to Oura's production., • Sustainable Components & Materials: Partner with R&D and engineering teams to research, evaluate, and integrate more sustainable materials and components into Oura products and packaging, considering lifecycle impacts., • Carbon Footprint Measurement & Reduction: Establish methodologies for measuring Oura's manufacturing and supply chain carbon footprint (Scope 3 emissions), identify key reduction levers, and track progress against targets, creating these systems where they don't yet exist., • Carbon Credits & Offsetting: Evaluate, recommend, and manage carbon offsetting strategies and carbon credit programs as part of Oura's broader climate action plan., • Supplier Engagement & Auditing: Work with suppliers and CMs to assess their environmental performance, develop improvement plans, and ensure compliance with Oura's sustainability standards and relevant regulations, driving partner adoption of new sustainable practices. Requirements We would love to have you on our team if you have: • Minimum of 7+ years of experience in environmental sustainability, manufacturing operations, or supply chain, with a proven focus on implementing sustainability initiatives in a hardware or consumer electronics company, • Demonstrated experience in building and leading new programs or functions, particularly in sustainability, within an organization, • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes for consumer products (e.g., electronics assembly, injection molding, metal fabrication), • Proven expertise with carbon footprint accounting and reduction strategies (e.g., GHG Protocol, Scope 1, 2, 3 emissions), including experience with carbon credits or offsetting programs, • Proven expertise in waste management principles, particularly regarding e-waste, manufacturing waste, and circular economy concepts, • Experience in sustainable logistics and freight optimization, including familiarity with various transportation modes and their environmental impacts, • Knowledge of sustainable material science and experience in evaluating the environmental impact of components and materials used in product manufacturing, • Familiarity with manufacturing energy efficiency opportunities and renewable energy integration in factory settings, • Understanding of relevant environmental regulations (e.g., EPR, WEEE, RoHS, REACH) and industry certifications, • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to lead complex initiatives involving multiple stakeholders and external partners, • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to collect, interpret, and present data to drive informed decisions, • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of influencing, collaborating, and building strong relationships across diverse teams and cultures, • A strong pioneering spirit, a passion for environmental sustainability, and a proactive, problem-solving mindset At Oura, we care about you and your well-being.
