Job Description Reports to: Medical Director/Chief Veterinarian Status: Full-time, part-time, or per diem Compensation: Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits Schedule: Flexible options (12-hour shifts); day, swing, or overnight shifts, depending on hospital needs; evenings, weekends, and holidays included About the Role At Uintah Pet ER, we are here for pets and the people who love them—especially in moments of urgency, uncertainty, and crisis. Our Emergency Veterinarians play a critical role in delivering skilled, compassionate, and efficient emergency and critical care while supporting a collaborative, team-driven hospital culture. This position provides emergency and urgent care services to companion animals in a fast-paced, high acuity environment. You will be a part of a team of experienced ER doctors, highly utilized RVTs, Veterinary Assistants, and a supportive leadership team to diagnose, stabilize, treat, and guide patients and families through some of their most difficult moments. We prioritize high-quality medicine, clear communication, and teamwork. Every shift requires clinical confidence, adaptability, and the ability to remain calm and decisive under pressure. What You’ll Do • Emergency & Critical Patient Care: Provide thorough and efficient assessment, diagnosis, stabilization, and treatment of emergency and urgent care cases. Manage a wide range of presentations including trauma, respiratory distress, gastrointestinal emergencies, toxin exposures, neurologic events, post-operative complications, and other acute conditions. Perform emergency surgeries and procedures as indicated, and oversee ongoing critical patient management throughout hospitalization., • Diagnostics & Medical Management: Utilize in-house diagnostics, imaging, and laboratory capabilities to guide clinical decision-making. Develop and implement appropriate treatment plans, administer medications and anesthesia as needed, and adjust care plans based on patient response and changing clinical status., • Client Communication & Advocacy: Communicate clearly, professionally, and compassionately with clients facing stressful and emotionally charged situations. Provide transparent explanations of diagnoses, treatment options, prognoses, and costs. Support clients through decision-making processes, including end-of-life discussions, with empathy and professionalism., • Team Collaboration: Work closely with fellow veterinarians, RVTs, Veterinary Assistants, and Client Service Representatives to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality patient care. Support strong technician utilization and maintain clear, respectful communication across the hospital. Contribute to a culture of accountability, teamwork, and shared problem-solving., • Medical Records & Professional Standards: Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant medical records. Adhere to hospital protocols, medical standards, and safety practices. Participate in continuing education and ongoing professional development to support growth in emergency and critical care medicine. Qualifications • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited institution., • Active veterinary license in good standing (or ability to obtain licensure prior to start date)., • Completion of a rotating internship preferred., • Minimum of 1–3 years of clinical experience; prior emergency or high-volume practice experience strongly preferred., • Demonstrated competency in emergency case management, stabilization, anesthesia, and surgical procedures., • Proficiency in diagnostic interpretation, including radiographs, laboratory results, and point-of care ultrasound preferred., • Commitment to maintaining continuing education and staying current with standards in emergency and critical care medicine. Physical & Work Environment Requirements • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and remain on your feet for extended periods., • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-acuity emergency environment., • Willingness to handle animals that may be frightened, injured, painful, or reactive., • Ability to stay professional, focused, and compassionate during emotionally challenging situations., • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with clients, doctors, and staff., • Work takes place in an emergency and critical care hospital with variable caseloads and acuity., • Exposure to animals, medications, anesthetic agents, cleaning chemicals, and other potential workplace hazards., • Noise levels can range from moderate to high., • Ability to work independently and confidently manage cases when covering the floor alone, with support and consultation available from the Medical Director as needed., • Strict adherence to safety protocols, including PPE requirements, is expected.
