Job DescriptionSalary: Athletic Stipend Head Boys Basketball Coach Varsity Reports To: Athletic Director / Principal Position Summary: To provide leadership, organization, and supervision for the varsity boys basketball program. The Head Coach is responsible for all aspects of the program, including planning, instruction, strategy, player development, safety, sportsmanship, supervision of assistant coaches, and full compliance with VHSL and school district rules and policies. Key Responsibilities: • Plan, organize, and conduct all practices, workouts, and conditioning programs for the varsity boys basketball team., • Teach basketball fundamentalsshooting, ball handling, passing, defense, rebounding, offensive/defensive systemsappropriate to players abilities and levels., • Develop and implement offensive and defensive strategies; oversee game preparation and in-game decision-making., • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate assistant coaches and coordinate responsibilities within the coaching staff., • Monitor and enforce team rules, discipline, and conduct consistent with school, district, and VHSL policies., • Ensure student-athlete safety: proper technique instruction, safe equipment usage, adherence to athletic training protocols, concussion procedures, and emergency response guidelines., • Oversee scheduling, travel arrangements, and supervision of athletes during games, tournaments, and team activities., • Maintain accurate records of player eligibility, attendance, statistics, and required VHSL documentation., • Communicate effectively with players, parents, faculty, administration, and the athletic department., • Coordinate off-season development opportunities in accordance with VHSL regulations., • Oversee equipment management: ordering, inventory, maintenance, and proper storage., • Attend required VHSL rules clinics, coaching development sessions, and maintain required certifications., • Promote academic achievement, sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and character development among student-athletes., • Represent the school and athletic program in a professional and positive manner within the community. Qualifications: • Experience playing and/or coaching basketball at the high school level or higher preferred., • Demonstrated knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, and strategies., • Familiarity with VHSL rules, eligibility requirements, and compliance procedures., • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills., • CPR/First Aid/AED certification (or ability to obtain)., • Teaching certification preferred (may vary by school/district)., • Compliance with background checks; school district hiring and VHSL certification requirements. Work Conditions: • Practices and games held after school, evenings, weekends, and school holidays., • Travel required for away games and tournaments., • Seasonal stipend position (supplemental contract) unless otherwise assigned additional duties., • Indoor gymnasium setting; extended periods of standing and active supervision. Performance Standards: • Full compliance with VHSL and school district policies, including eligibility, safety, and ethical conduct., • Establishes and maintains a positive team culture focused on accountability and excellence., • Reliability in attending practices, games, meetings, and professional development sessions., • Maintains effective communication with athletic administration, staff, players, and parents., • Ensures proper care and maintenance of equipment and facilities., • Demonstrates measurable program growth in athlete development, sportsmanship, and competitive performance.
