Job Description Job Title: Inspection Technician Job Description The Inspection Technician performs field-based inspections of utility-owned gas meters and related facilities to identify corrosion, damage, and potential safety issues. This entry-level role combines customer interaction, mechanical aptitude, and regulatory compliance, requiring professionalism in customers’ homes and consistent documentation of all work performed. The position is heavily focused on safety, reliability, and adherence to established procedures while working independently in the field throughout the utility service territory. Responsibilities • Perform periodic inspections and surveys of utility-owned gas meters and related facilities to identify corrosion, damage, and other potential issues., • Enter customers’ homes in a professional manner to access and inspect gas meters and associated equipment., • Document all inspection findings accurately and completely in accordance with regulatory requirements and company procedures., • Complete all necessary paperwork and electronic documentation using provided forms, tools, and software., • Support the successful completion of regulatory audits and inspections by maintaining thorough, accurate records and following established protocols., • Conduct integrity surveys, including direct assessments and close interval surveys, to evaluate the condition of gas infrastructure., • Perform audit reviews with operations teams and provide support during internal and external audits., • Communicate clearly with customers to explain the purpose of inspections, address basic questions, and represent the organization in a professional, customer service–oriented manner., • Interface with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, contractors, and other stakeholders as needed., • Follow all safety procedures and participate in safety initiatives aimed at preventing gas leaks and other hazards., • Attend and actively participate in required training, including classroom sessions, homework assignments, practice exams, and certification testing., • Use a handheld tablet to receive and follow daily routes and to update job status and inspection results throughout the day., • Report to assigned job sites within the service territory (primarily Brooklyn and Queens) and manage daily workloads independently., • Operate company vehicles when required, including moving vehicles as directed, in compliance with driving and safety policies., • Adhere to attendance expectations, communicate promptly with supervisors regarding sick time or absences, and meet performance standards during the probationary period., • Maintain tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment in good working condition and use them properly during all inspections. Essential Skills • Valid state driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle, with at least 1+ year of driving experience., • Ability to walk, climb stairs, and use ladders throughout an 8-hour workday in all weather conditions, including walking several miles per day and standing for extended periods., • Demonstrated reliability and professionalism when working in customers’ homes and in the field., • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to speak clearly and explain the inspection process to customers and stakeholders., • Customer service orientation, with a professional demeanor and the ability to interact respectfully with the public., • Basic to intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook., • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage daily routes, documentation, and multiple tasks with minimal supervision., • Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently in the field., • Intermediate knowledge of mathematics and algebra, with sufficient mechanical aptitude to understand gas meter and infrastructure components., • High school diploma or equivalent., • Mechanical aptitude or experience related to cable technology, HVAC, piping, or automotive mechanics (entry-level candidates with mechanical ability are encouraged)., • Ability to adhere to structured training programs, complete homework and practice exams on personal time, and pass required certification exams., • Willingness and ability to comply with all safety policies and procedures in a highly regulated environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications • 1+ year of professional experience and a consistent job history., • Experience in customer-facing roles or field service positions., • Exposure to inspection, maintenance, or technical roles such as cable technician, HVAC technician, piping work, or automotive mechanic., • Comfort using handheld tablets or mobile devices to receive routes, record data, and complete digital forms., • Experience coordinating with operations teams, contractors, and public agencies is beneficial., • Strong interpersonal skills and initiative, with the ability to take ownership of tasks and follow through to completion., • Ability to remain focused and engaged during training sessions and classroom instruction., • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and development programs over multi-year initiatives. Work Environment • This is a 100% field-based position within the utility service territory, primarily in Brooklyn and Queens. Technicians typically work Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with occasional Saturday shifts available at the supervisor’s request and the contractor’s discretion. Each day begins by reporting to job sites within the territory, often using a personal vehicle to reach the assigned area, and then working independently from a list of addresses provided via a handheld tablet. Tailboard meetings and coordination may occur at warehouse locations in Queens or Brooklyn. The role requires working outdoors and indoors in all weather conditions, walking several miles per day, climbing stairs and ladders, and spending most of the day on your feet. The environment is highly safety-focused, with an initial training program that includes OSHA orientation, classroom sessions, homework assignments, practice exams, and certification testing. The first 90 days serve as a probationary period during which performance, engagement in training, and adherence to procedures are closely evaluated. Equipment provided includes a basic tool set, flashlight, gas detector, field binder, ID badges, tools and tool belt, handheld tablet, and personal protective equipment such as flame-resistant shirts and pants, safety vest, and hard hat. Communication with supervisors regarding attendance, scheduling, and performance expectations is ongoing, and the work involves regular interaction with customers, operations teams, and various external stakeholders.Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New York, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
