The Role and Department As Senior Fire Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for applying advanced fire engineering principles in the design and assessment of buildings across a diverse estate. This includes the technical delivery of fire safety services, design and drawing appraisals, and ensuring compliance with Approved Document B, BS9999, BS9991 or performance-based fire engineering solutions. You will provide expert advice on a wide range of fire safety issues such as compartmentation, passive and active fire protection systems, occupancy levels, fire escape strategies, emergency lighting, alarms, fire suppression systems, fire-fighting equipment, and specialist systems. You will also assess fire safety arrangements for disabled occupants, fire appliance access, and construction-phase fire safety. You will produce and review Fire Safety Manuals and provide technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle. Extensive experience in fire dynamics and delivering fire engineering consultancy across complex projects is essential. In addition to technical expertise, you will lead the Fire Safety team, providing strategic direction, operational oversight, and professional development, while fostering a culture of continuous improvement. You will also be required to lead on policy development, internal governance, and quality assurance, ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks and institutional standards. By promoting a deep understanding of fire safety policy and external developments, you will play a key role in shaping the future of fire safety provision within the University. The Electrical Power Research Node comprises a group of eight academics with seven research associates and 20 PhD students. We have three laboratories to support work in this area, focussing on Smart Grid and Power Systems Modelling, Electrical Machines, and Power Electronics, to underpin research across a range of applications from both a UK and global perspective. The established research activities include the reliability of offshore wind turbines, power take-off systems, smart grids, power system optimisation, hardware-in-loop simulations, magnetic material characterisation and transformer-less power converters. The laboratories house a range of electrical engineering infrastructure, including 75 kW and 20 kW dynamometers, a fully instrumented microgrid and MVDC power electronics. Supported by Real-Time power system simulation capability, these laboratories enable the investigation of a complete electrical power system using a combination of hardware and simulation. Industrial engagement is a key enabler for the research activities, in tandem with development of economic, environmental and societal impact. The Fluid Mechanics Research Node consists of five academics and ten PhD students. Our research is supported by a host of experimental facilities and access to state-of-the-art CPU and GPU computing clusters. Experimental facilities include: the Durham 2m Wind Tunnel (a SATA member facility with fixed and moving ground configurations and an active turbulence generation system); a supersonic blowdown facility capable of reaching Mach 5 within a hardened test cell; a multifunctional jet generator that produces pulsatile jets in water and supports advanced flow measurements such as StereoPIV and TomoPIV; and the Durham Cascade, a large-scale, low-speed cascade designed to achieve engine-representative Reynolds numbers. The Role A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available to pursue experimental research in the field of complex magnetism within the Durham Condensed Matter Physics group. The position is associated with a new two-year Grant on "Advanced materials for next-generation spintronics: The deterministic control of altermagnets" funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The research builds upon our expertise in understanding and predicting novel magnetostructural coupling schemes in quantum materials. We employ theoretical analyses of crystal and magnetic symmetry, characterised experimentally by state-of-the-art synchrotron X-ray and neutron scattering experiments performed at large-scale national and international facilities. The post holder will work directly with Dr. Roger Johnson and other members of his research group within the Durham Condensed Matter Physics research section, and in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Warwick, University College London, and the XMaS beamline at the European Synchrotron Radiation Source, Grenoble, France. The recent discovery of altermagnetism marks a transformative leap in the potential application of antiferromagnets in spintronics. The goal of the research is to address a key scientific challenge before altermagnetic materials can be exploited in technologies of the future. The challenge is to find novel methods of deterministic antiferromagnetic domain control through the application of external fields that modify the underlying crystal symmetries. The postholders will be expected to display initiative and creativity in this endeavour, together with the appropriate skills and knowledge, required to work with Dr. Johnson and collaborators to deliver the research aims. These include (1) imaging altermagnetic domains through interference resonant X-ray diffraction, (2) establish novel methods of deterministic strain-gated altermagnetic domain switching under relatively small applied magnetic fields, and (3) democratise principles of best practice for the study of advanced materials under applied stress. The post holder is therefore expected to have experience and familiarity with scattering techniques employed at synchrotron X-ray and/or neutron facilities in the study of crystal and magnetic structures, ideally including the in-situ application of uniaxial strain to bulk single crystals. The post holder is expected to be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a small research team. It is expected that the post holder will enhance the international contacts of the group and wider impact of the research through the presentation of work at international conferences and exchange visits to our international project partner at the Advanced Photon Source, USA. The post holder will also have the opportunity to aid in the supervision of postgraduate research students within the group, contribute to the undergraduate teaching within the Department, and partake in public engagement activities and the publication of case studies. Although solid solutions in metals and inorganic materials are well-studied, little is known about systems where the host and dopants are small organic molecules (MoSS). There is huge potential of utilising MoSS for changing and modulating materials properties, such as solubilities, crystal polymorph, crystal sizes and shapes and rates of dissolution. The overall goal of the consortium is to develop and apply cutting-edge techniques in crystal synthesis, characterisation and modelling to study and generate a new understanding of MoSS. These advances will have applications across multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and food industries. There are multiple opportunities to collaborate, take part in network events and undertake research placements within this project. You will have a PhD in Physical Sciences or a closely related field, and you will have a background in X-ray diffraction. Knowledge of databases, crystallisation and other characterisation methods for molecular crystals is a must. The key responsibilities are to develop a database of MoSS, to study MoSS with various diffraction methods, to develop code to automate the characterisation of MoSS with diffraction and other methods. The project is a collaboration between Newcastle University, Durham University, Teesside University and the National Trust. The project will work alongside an evaluation team from Durham and Northumbria Universities. The post will be based in the Department of Geography, which comprises 65 academic staff (approximately equally divided between Human and Physical geography), a graduate school of around 100 research students, around 40 taught postgraduate students and 850 undergraduates. The Department is well supported with technical staff, including a cartography unit, and administrative staff. The Department was ranked joint first for research quality among UK geography departments in REF2021. 54% of our outputs were classed as 'world leading' and more than 92% as 'world leading' or internationally excellent'. The aim of GCNE is to develop new co-created arts- and humanities-led research practices that will contribute significantly to the transformative regeneration of green corridors in the UK and beyond. The project will develop, spread, and scale a co-produced model of placemaking. The project spans more than 35 miles of three green corridors in the North East: The Tyne Derwent Way in Gateshead, Durham City Green Corridor, and the Tees to Topping Green Corridor running into and out of Middlesbrough. These three green corridors are part of an ambitious programme being led by the National Trust to help work in partnership to establish 20 green corridors across England, Northern Ireland and Wales by 2030, working in urban areas to address unequal access to and deliver benefits for nature, heritage, and people. Green corridors have risen to prominence as vital tools in urban planning, as well as connecting pockets of nature, they also connect people to their natural and cultural heritage. The objectives of the project are to (i) convene exceptional teams, bringing together research, professional and community expertise to shape and deliver change, (ii) co-develop research questions and practices that are place based, cross-cutting and focused on environment, community and storytelling; (iii) co-produce research on the four themes of (1) heritage and history (the focus of this post); (2) culture and creativity (the focus of a matching post based at Teesside University); (3) nature and natural heritage (the focus of a matching post based at Newcastle University); (4) active evaluation for learning (e.g. research conducted by team members, serving as learning and evaluation) (supported by staff in Durham and Northumbria Universities); with cross-cutting 'super themes' of well-being and stewardship. The Role The Bourne-Worster group are looking for a postdoctoral research assistant (PDRA) for 2.5 years to join them in exploring environment effects on the photodynamic properties of chromophores. The project is funded by the PI's recently awarded Royal Society University Research Fellowship 'Designing photocatalysts for the circular economy: environmental control of chromophore photochemistry'. Its particular focus will be a detailed comparative study of chlorophyll pigments in photosynthetic antenna complexes and reaction centres, with the aim of isolating the features of the protein environment that optimise chlorophyll towards energy transfer (in the antenna complexes) or charge transfer (in the reaction centres). In the course of this project you will: • Characterise the properties of the protein environment in terms of appropriate chemical descriptors (e.g. polarity, cavity shape, pH), • Perform molecular dynamics simulations to sample a dynamic range of protein-pigment conformations, • Construct a series of QM-MM models to systematically consider the contributions of individual environmental influences., • Carry out quantum chemical calculations of excited state properties., • Implement any code necessary to construct the models described above (where open-source code or implementations in standard software do not already exist)., • Work alongside the PI and other group members to develop more efficient methods for accessing the excited state and dynamics properties of large chromophores. We are looking for an outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a research project based in the groups of Prof. Aurora J. Cruz-Cabeza and Prof. John Evans. The project is part of a new £7m EPSRC funded Programme Grant that brings together a team of researchers from the universities of Durham, Leeds and Manchester investigating the formation of Molecular Solid Solutions (MoSS). Solid solutions are created when atoms or ions of a dopant are incorporated within the crystal structure of a host. Even at minute quantities, this can significantly alter the properties of crystals. Although solid solutions in metals and inorganic materials are well-studied, little is known about systems where the host and dopants are small organic molecules (MoSS). There is huge potential of utilising MoSS for changing and modulating materials properties, such as solubilities, crystal polymorph, crystal sizes and shapes and rates of dissolution. The overall goal of the consortium is to develop and apply cutting-edge techniques in crystal synthesis, characterisation and modelling to study and generate a new understanding of MoSS. These advances will have applications across multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and food industries. There are multiple opportunities to collaborate, take part in network events and undertake research placements within this project. You will have a PhD in Physical Sciences or a closely related field, and you will have a background in the modelling of molecular crystals. The key responsibilities are to develop, test and implement different modelling methodologies into novel workflows to predict MoSS formation. The successful candidate will be involved in the supervision of a PhD student during the duration of the position and will have significant of opportunities for career development. Key responsibilities: • To develop and implement coding tools (python, C++, bash scripting...) for the modelling of molecular crystals., • To work closely with other experimentalists in the consortium and support experiments through computations., • To help develop and build a database of MoSS., • To understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions that leads to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications., • To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include: research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences., • To publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder., • To assist with the development of research objectives and proposals., • To conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder., • To plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects., • To deliver training in research techniques/approaches to peers, visitors and students as appropriate., • To be involved in student supervision, as appropriate, and assist with the assessment of the knowledge of students., • To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect., • To engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider discipline., • To engage in continuing professional development by participation in the undergraduate or postgraduate teaching programmes or by membership of departmental committees, etc. and by attending relevant training and development courses.
