Job Description Dental Assistant FCI Pekin Work Location Federal Correctional Institute-Pekin 2600 S. Second Street Pekin, Illinois 61554 • Citizenship Requirements: Must be a U.S. Citizen., • Clearance Requirements: National Background Check with Inquiries and Fingerprints,, • and Drug Screen., • Period of Performance: Time of Award up to five (5) years., • Type of Employment: Full-time, 40 hours per week., • Estimated Pay: $21.34 - $26.43 per hour., • Pay Holidays: Fourteen (14) Paid Holidays., • Paid Time Off: 80 hours, occurring on day one. Summary of Duties The Dental Assistant will provide services such as retrieving patients' records and escorting them to the appropriate dental specialty section; seating and preparing patients for the attending Dental Officer; assisting the Dental Officer by preparing dental instruments, essential materials, drugs, and medications; passing instruments and performing other related duties. Qualifications • Must be a graduate from a Dental Assistant accredited school or program and/or possess specialty training from a licensed dentist and/or certification., • Must have a Dental Assistant license (Registered) from the state of Pennsylvania., • Training must include dental radiology and radiology safety, • A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Dental Assistant., • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC)or the American Heart Association (AHA). Attire The contractor is expected to wear professional clothing while on duty (scrub uniforms are approved). The attire worn shall also be appropriate for the correctional environment in which the contract employee will be performing. Duties and Responsibilities • Assists Dental Officer in dental specialty sections: restorative, oral surgery, endodontics, periodontics, prosthetics, and examinations., • Retrieves patients' records and escorts patients to the proper dental specialty section; seats and prepares patients for attending to the Dental Officer., • Assists the Dental Officer by preparing dental instruments, essential materials, drugs, and medications., • Passes instruments, retracts tissues, irrigates the oral cavity, and operates the aspirator., • Observes patient's responses and assists patient for dismissal from the Dental Clinic., • Give instructions for subsequent dental appointments., • Makes necessary entries on dental treatment records (both electronic and paper records)., • Prepares the dental treatment room for the next patient., • Assists in the treatment of emergency cases., • Provides dental health education., • Performs Dental prophylaxes - polishing of coronal portion of teeth, if the assistant is a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) or Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA)., • Performs Dental screening examinations., • Prepares patients for periodontal surgery., • Completes dental and periodontal charting., • Prepares, places, and removes packs., • Places temporary fillings (RDA, EFDA)., • Places and removes rubber dams., • Maintains dental equipment., • Cleans, sharpens, and sterilizes instruments., • Performs daily inspection of equipment and makes minor repairs., • Reports defective equipment or institutes corrective action., • Uses dental hand instruments, mechanical instruments (including ultrasonic), oral hygiene aides, and prophylaxis paste to provide necessary oral prophylactic services., • Prepares entries for patients records., • Select and apply medication in proper portions and anti-cariogenic agents to the surface of teeth., • Applies medication prescribed by a Dental Officer to the gingiva to promote healing., • Fabricates and repairs dental prostheses and appliances under supervision, • Performs procedures pursuant to the fabrication and repair of complete dentures, prostheses, and removable partial prostheses., • Uses acrylic resins and porcelain as basic materials., • Takes radiographs of patients using digital intraoral and panoramic dental radiography., • Obtains diagnostic quality periapical, occlusal, lateral jaw, and TMJ radiographs., • Correctly positions patient and sensor., • Determines the level of radiation intensity to minimize radiation exposure of patients., • Processes and saves digital radiographs to patient medical records., • Maintains proper infection control procedures in radiographic techniques., • Sterilizes contaminated biological waste of the dental clinic., • Places and finishes dental restorations, including bases and liners., • Make primary impressions and pour casts., • Selects tooth shade for composite restorations and dentures., • Maintains accurate sharps and instrument inventories., • Maintains logs for surface disinfectants, autoclave maintenance, and chair filters.
