The Zoo is looking for responsible, enthusiastic students who can interact positively with guests. Students of all academic levels will be considered for the program. This information packet contains an overview of the program, program requirements, and application guide. Since 2002, our nationally-recognized PEDZ Program has provided employment and professional development opportunities to Chattanooga youth. This unique and engaging program allows students to become part-time Zoo employees. Participants engage in a variety of experiences that provide them with opportunities to serve their community, develop career skills, and broaden their understanding of the Zoo's mission. Chattanooga Zoo PEDZ participants work 20 hours per week through June and July. PEDZ positions are available in a variety of departments throughout the Zoo - Education, Guest Services, Maintenance, and Animal Care. As a PEDZ participant you will have the opportunity to participate in a Professional Development series to help prepare you for entry into the workforce. Care Closet Provision Additionally, Chattanooga Zoo will provide toiletries and other necessities to participants upon request. If there are any items of need that we do not have on hand, participants are encouraged to request the provision of those items. What to Expect: A Summer in the PEDZ Program The PEDZ Program is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on work experience while learning about careers in conservation, education, business, and zoo operations. Unlike a traditional summer job, PEDZ provides specialized training, career exploration, and professional development designed to set you up for long-term success. Here's what you can expect during your summer with us:Orientation & Training Your summer will begin with a mandatory PEDZ On-Boarding (May 8, 2026, 5:30pm-7:30pm) and Orientation (May 29, 2026 12pm-3:30pm), where you'll meet fellow participants, learn about Zoo policies, and get an overview of your role. You'll also receive training specific to your assigned track, which may include customer service, animal care basics, educational programming, or event support.Work Schedule & Responsibilities PEDZ participants work up to 20 hours per week, Monday through Sunday, during June and July. Your daily tasks will vary depending on your track, but you can expect to:Engage with Zoo guests through education and customer service.Assist in caring for animals, maintaining exhibits, or supporting conservation projects.Work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.Complete assigned projects, such as animal enrichment activities, social media content, or event planning.Beyond a Traditional Summer Job PEDZ is designed to equip you with skills that go beyond entry-level work experience. Job Title: Resident Director Reports to: Associate Dean of Students, Residence Life Classification: Full-time, Exempt, 10-month Summary The Resident Director facilitates an environment that cultivates the discipleship and holistic development of students. While living alongside students, the Resident Director will mentor and develop students, manage discipline and conflict, facilitate co-curricular programs, and oversee the administration of the residence hall, as well as help coordinate responses to emergencies on campus. The Resident Director is to demonstrate an active and Reformed Christian commitment, serving as a model, advisor, and facilitator of student development. Essential Functions: Student Experience and Management • Provide mentorship and discipleship opportunities for student leaders and residents., • Supervise, track, and guide all Residence Hall programming with a focus on learning outcomes and student needs., • Administer the Residence Hall day-to-day operations through partnering with various campus departments to ensure a safe and well-maintained residence hall., • Encourage a culture of student participation and foster a sense of belonging by providing students with opportunities for relational development and holistic growth., • Manage a residence hall budget and maintain up-to-date and accurate accounting records., • Maintain availability to students and be a visible presence in the residence hall., • Serve in an on-call duty rotation both weekdays, weekends, and academic breaks to respond to incidents and emergencies (i.e., mental health, medical, facility,s etc.), • Engage and facilitate student care, conflict, and discipline conversations, and provide follow-up care in conjunction with Resident Assistants., • Recruit, interview, and hire Resident Assistants for the upcoming academic year., • Provide an intensive fall and winter Resident Assistant training to prepare Resident Assistants for their job responsibilities., • Teach a three-week spring Resident Assistant class to orient them to their future responsibilities., • Meet regularly with each Resident Assistant for one-on-one supervision and mentorship., • Oversee the housing process sign-ups for returning students and collaborate with the Admissions Department to assign rooms to incoming students., • Act as a liaison between the residence hall community and the faculty and staff to provide institutional knowledge of the student experience., • Meet regularly with Residence Life staff and the Associate Dean of Students., • Communicate with the Center for Student Success regarding high-risk students to provide additional support and resources., • Assist the Admissions Department on strategic recruiting weekends., • Model and live in a manner worthy of the Lord and pleasing to Him., • Fulfill all employee responsibilities outlined in the Staff Manual., • Servant Leadership: lead by example and serve the needs of others., • Teamwork and Collaboration: contribute to the common vision and mission of Covenant College, help foster a workplace of trust and mutual support, and take responsibility for individual work., • Time management: strategically allocate time to immediate concerns and long-term projects., • Attention to detail: accurately execute assigned tasks., • Organizational skills: effectively manage multiple systems and processes., • Effective communication: clearly express ideas and information both verbally and in writing across a wide variety of audiences., • Adaptability: adjust to new situations with flexibility.
