POSITION TITLE: Coding Lead - Inpatient ROLE TYPE: Full Time EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Non-Exempt JOB SUMMARY: The Coding Lead – Inpatient is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and quality of inpatient coding while providing leadership support to the coding team. This position oversees daily work queues, team communication, and ensures client requests are met according to contract standards, payer guidelines, and compliance standards. The Coding Lead serves as a liaison between coders, internal leadership, and client representatives, facilitating communication, addressing coding or documentation issues, and supporting continuous process improvement. In addition to lead responsibilities, the role includes hands-on inpatient coding duties, accurately abstracting data into client electronic medical record systems in accordance with Official ICD-10-CM/PCS Guidelines, UHDDS standards, and CMS regulations. This position requires active coding responsibilities for approximately 50% or more of the weekly workload, with lead and team support responsibilities comprising up to 50% of weekly time. This role functions as an inpatient subject matter expert (SME) and will assist with onboarding new coders to the client environment while serving as a resource for coding guidance and complex case review. The Coding Lead is expected to maintain productivity standards while supporting the overall performance and development of the coding team. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Assign appropriate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes to inpatient accounts as per designated workflow, • Abstract and enter coded data for hospital statistical and reporting requirements as required, • Communicate documentation improvement opportunities and coding issues to appropriate personnel for follow-up and resolution, • · Identify coding trends, risks, and improvement opportunities and proactively communicate recommendations, • Support alignment of workflows and best practices between client requirements and organizational standards, • Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) and/or Revenue Cycle teams to obtain documentation clarification and support reconciliation of accounts, • Monitor coding work queues to ensure balanced workload distribution and timely completion of assignments, • Provide guidance and feedback to maintain compliance with company and client expectations, • Collaborate with leadership to develop and deliver targeted education and training based on audit results, trends, and client needs, • Promote continuous improvement through knowledge sharing, feedback loops, and collaborative problem-solving initiatives, • Track and report client deliverables, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with contract metrics, • Support onboarding, training, and mentoring of new inpatient coders and serve as an ongoing coding resource, • Maintain personal productivity and quality metrics in addition to lead responsibilities, • Ensure compliance with all applicable coding, privacy, and documentation regulations, • Maintain required coding credentials and continuing education BENEFITS: We offer an excellent salary, full benefits package including 401(k) with company match, medical, dental, vision, life, short/long term disability insurance, and PTO policy. Requirements: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Active CCS credential required (AHIMA), • Additional AHIMA credentials preferred, • Minimum 3 years of inpatient coding experience in an academic medical center with 500+ beds required, • Strong experience with ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding, • Inpatient subject matter expert (SME) experience preferred, • Experience supporting onboarding and mentoring of coding staff, • Experience with Elixhauser and Vizient reporting or metrics strongly preferred, • Demonstrated ability to manage work queues, monitor performance metrics, and meet client deliverables, • Excellent oral and written communication skills KEY SUCCESS ATTRIBUTES: • Demonstrates strong leadership and collaboration skills, • Possesses advanced analytical and problem-solving abilities, • Exhibits consistent initiative, accountability, and drive for results, • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills, • Ability to self-motivate, self-direct, and manage multiple priorities, • Exceptional time management and organizational skills, • High level of professional integrity, confidentiality, and ethical judgment, • Communication and Collaboration, • Leadership and Accountability, • Integrity and Ethical Judgment, • Consistency and Reliability, • Meeting and Exceeding Standards
