Job Description Job Title: Material Handler Job Description The Material Handler supports a busy scrap metal operation by safely sorting, organizing, and moving metal materials for processing and recycling. This is a highly physical role that involves lifting and transporting metal parts, unloading and loading trucks, and working both inside a warehouse and outside in the yard. Roughly half of the work takes place indoors and half outdoors, in a heavy industrial environment. Responsibilities • Sort and organize various metals for processing and recycling according to established procedures., • Handle materials safely and efficiently, moving metal parts from one area to another throughout the facility., • Regularly lift and carry metal parts weighing up to 50 pounds as part of daily tasks., • Unload incoming trucks and load outgoing trucks using appropriate material handling methods., • Work both inside the warehouse and outside in the yard, adapting to changing weather and environmental conditions., • Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment at all times., • Maintain a clean and organized work area, promptly addressing debris or obstructions that may create hazards., • Support production and manufacturing workflows by ensuring materials are staged and moved in a timely manner., • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to coordinate material flow and task priorities., • Operate in a heavy industrial environment with awareness of surrounding equipment, machinery, and noise levels. Essential Skills • Experience working in manufacturing, warehousing, or an industrial environment., • Comfort working in a heavy industrial setting, including exposure to noise, dirt, and moving equipment., • Ability to regularly lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds throughout the shift., • Willingness to work outside approximately 50% of the time in varying weather conditions., • Consistent use of required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, steel-toe boots, and ear plugs., • Reliability and strong work ethic suitable for a production, manufacturing, or warehouse distribution environment., • Ability to follow safety rules and operational procedures accurately and consistently. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience in general labor, production, manufacturing, warehouse distribution, industrial work, or materials handling., • Comfort working in a loud environment with heavy equipment and machinery operating nearby., • Ability to adapt to changing tasks and priorities in a fast-paced industrial setting., • Strong teamwork and communication skills to coordinate with coworkers and supervisors. Work Environment This role operates on a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The setting is a heavy industrial scrap metal yard that is on the dirtier side of work environments and can be loud in many areas due to heavy equipment and machinery running. Work is split between the warehouse and the outdoor yard, with roughly 50% of time spent outside in the elements. Required personal protective equipment includes a hard hat, steel-toe boots, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, and ear plugs, all of which must be worn while on the job. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portland, OR. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.50 - $23.50/hr.
