Job Description The Indirect Tax Manager will lead and manage all aspects of indirect tax compliance and audit management for Public Storage and its related entities in 40 states across the U.S. This newly elevated managerial role includes strategic leadership of the company’s Sales Tax process outsourcing to a third-party service provider, ensuring comprehensive oversight, performance monitoring, and alignment with organizational objectives. This position reports directly to the Director, Indirect Tax. As a key leader within the tax team, the Indirect Tax Manager will direct, mentor, and support team members and collaborate closely with internal stakeholders including accounting, finance, and IT, as well as with external partners and third-party vendors. The manager is responsible for the overall integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of indirect tax compliance processes—including sales and use tax, property tax, gross receipts, business licenses, and unclaimed property—across a complex and dynamic multi-state operating environment. The Indirect Tax Manager will play a pivotal role in steering process improvements, implementing best practices, and fostering a culture of compliance, efficiency, and accountability within the tax function. Key Responsibilities • Provide strategic direction and oversight for all indirect tax compliance activities, including sales and use tax, property tax, gross receipts, business licenses, and unclaimed property for Public Storage and its related entities in 40 states., • Lead, manage, and develop the outsourced property tax team ensuring high performance and effective resource allocation., • Oversee the end-to-end outsourcing relationship for sales tax processes, including performance management, contract compliance, issue resolution, and process optimization., • Ensure accurate compilation, review, and reconciliation of sales data to prepare and file 200+ state and local tax returns monthly, either in-house or via the third-party provider., • Maintain and monitor filing schedules and deadline tracking to ensure timely and accurate payment and compliance for all entities, including third-party managed properties., • Direct communication with tax authorities, overseeing tax notice management, resolution of inquiries, and compliance with regulatory requirements., • Lead state and local indirect tax audits, appeals, amended returns, refund claims, and internal reverse audits with a focus on risk mitigation and optimal outcomes., • Conduct and supervise indirect tax research and advisory services, providing guidance to the business, customers, and vendors, and maintaining productive relationships with all stakeholders., • Identify and champion opportunities for process automation, improvement, and efficiency gains, driving the implementation of approved changes across the tax function and outsourced processes., • Monitor tax compliance for all company locations, ensuring adherence to company tax policies and the latest tax regulations., • Oversee the monthly maintenance, integration, and enhancement of Thomson Reuters OneSource Sales & Use Compliance and its connectivity with point-of-sale and SAP systems., • Review and update tax procedure manuals to reflect current practices and regulatory developments., • Lead special projects and provide strategic ad hoc analysis as requested by senior leadership.Qualifications, • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field., • 7+ years of progressive experience in a corporate tax environment, public accounting, or a similar relevant field, with at least 4 years in indirect tax compliance or related functions., • Minimum 2 years’ experience managing staff, projects, or processes, preferably in a multi-state or large enterprise context., • Proven success in managing third-party vendors or outsourced business processes, preferably in tax compliance., • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, drive process improvements, and implement automation solutions., • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Access; expertise in advanced Excel functions (PivotTable, VLookup, Database Query, etc.) is preferred., • Experience with SAP and Thomson Reuters OneSource is highly desirable., • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with a solution-oriented mindset., • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on collaborative leadership and stakeholder engagement., • Ability to excel in multifaceted, dynamic, and fast-paced environments while maintaining high standards of accuracy and timeliness., • Experience with CMI certification is a plus.
