Job Summary: The Educational Advocate provides short-term academic advocacy services to remove barriers on behalf of students experiencing foster care, focusing primarily on school enrollment, academic support, and discipline. The Educational Advocate serves as a mission-driven, equity-centered staff member who contributes regularly to advance the organization’s commitment to antiracism, social justice, and belonging, working directly with caregivers, parents, school and district staff, and social workers. The Educational Advocate helps to ensure the educational needs of the students that Treehouse serves are met by strengthening and resourcing their natural supports. Educational Advocates align with Treehouse programmatic and operational goals through a culturally responsive and inclusive approach with acknowledgement of the trauma experienced by students experiencing foster care. The Educational Advocate seeks to help dismantle systemic inequities, promote psychological safety, engage in equitable practices across systems, and contribute to an organizational culture rooted in dignity, accountability, and care in service of the students that Treehouse supports. The position facilitates training opportunities and provides coaching to build capacity and knowledge around the intersection of education policy and practice, and child welfare policy and practice, including education law, advocacy skills, and foster care. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Manage an ever-changing caseload, using established case procedures and ensuring equitable practices., • Participate in cross-functional initiatives aimed at removing barriers to the students' successful school experience through working with their adult supports., • Maintain workflow efficiency and a collaborative organizational culture., • Establish inclusive, welcoming, and equitable team engagement, ensuring that teams provide a safe, positive, respectful experience for each student, inclusive of all racial and gender identities, and with awareness of the trauma experienced by students in care and historically marginalized communities., • Embrace transformation by seeking out perspectives across the organization and with partner organizations and communities to evolve how Treehouse serves students with curiosity and openness to new ideas., • Improve educational outcomes for students experiencing foster care by providing easily accessible educational planning and advocacy, as well as providing social-emotional development information to the students’ support network., • Ensure each student’s educational rights are upheld under federal and state law, incorporating de-escalation and conflict resolution skills, and ensuring school teams provide culturally sensitive and compassionate support to students who have experienced trauma or are in crisis., • Model dignity, accountability, and care for others, ensuring that engagement with community partners and student teams, as well as internal colleagues, remains positive and respectful., • Engage in ongoing education and reflection to strengthen the organization’s ability to support the growth, success, and well-being of the Black students Treehouse serves., • Collaborate to build long-term, respectful partnerships with Tribal Nations and Indigenous-led organizations to ensure offerings to Indigenous students are culturally grounded and community-informed., • Practice the value of abundance by helping ensure that students receive sufficient community resources., • Systematically evaluate educational needs and review educational history as needed for students., • Virtually attend and schedule meetings on behalf of Treehouse with schools, caregivers, parents, social workers, and other service providers. Attend occasional in-person school meetings and conduct regular virtual and occasional in-person training sessions for social workers and for Treehouse staff, including onboarding and capacity building., • Schedule and facilitate interagency meetings, negotiating services, facilitating transportation plans, assisting with credit transfer or retrieval, negotiating disciplinary appeals, etc., ensuring equitable treatment., • Maintain complete, accurate, and updated case records for each student in the program database, and treat all student information in a confidential manner., • Report on case progress to the Treehouse manager and to each student’s team as required., • Provide timely student feedback, communication, and reports to social workers, parents, and caregivers., • Provide advocacy outcome stories that incorporate our Treehouse values to represent the organizational mission upon request., • Provide regular virtual and occasional in-person outreach to the Department of Children, Youth, & Family (DCYF) offices., • Perform other duties as assigned.Requirements: Qualifications: • 2+ years’ experience providing advocacy and support to youth experiencing foster care and/or other vulnerable student populations preferred., • Experience facilitating and coordinating multiple parties with varying perspectives through complex situations preferred., • Experience navigating special education evaluations and education plans preferred., • Demonstrated understanding of federal and state education law related to special education preferred, • Must satisfy Washington State and national criminal background requirements., • Ability to deploy critical thinking, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence when communicating on behalf of Treehouse and within Treehouse, • Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and the ability to effectively engage in candid conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice., • Experience facilitating virtual and in-person meetings and presentations preferred., • Experience providing support on behalf of students, parents, and caregivers from diverse and traditionally underserved populations, including students of color, low-income students, and students with disabilities, in an equitable manner., • Ability to thrive while working independently outside an office setting, while maintaining trusting, healthy relationships with coworkers and managers to promote a productive workplace culture and strong employee engagement., • Ability to maintain records and data to support effective evaluation processes and analysis, and use program data to inform decision-making and service delivery strategies., • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines., • Demonstrated ability to build working relationships with individuals of various ages, cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, and abilities with dignity and respect., • Ability to set boundaries and utilize support services to manage the personal impact of working on behalf of students who have experienced trauma., • Ability and aptitude with Microsoft Office Suite and other technology necessary for successful day-to-day functioning in a business environment., • Willingness to knowledgeably engage with educational and community resources to promote educational attainment for students, helping adjust priorities through open dialogue, feedback, and transparent decision-making to ensure equitable service to students., • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information and sign a confidentiality agreement., • Ability to facilitate training sessions virtually to audiences of 5 to 500 people., • Full-time, Monday to Friday, • 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, • Frequent early morning/late running school meetings (before and after school)., • Limited travel on an exceptional basis., • Physical Requirements – long periods of stationary work, working on a computer, moving between various work areas, going up and down stairs, talking on the phone, interfacing with a computer/office equipment, and sitting at a desk or table while listening, talking, and taking notes.
