Job Description Position: Safety Officer, Trucking Support Location: 50 Mile Radius of Charleston, SC Reports To: Director of Risk and Safety and President of Company Employment Type: Full-Time Job Overview: The Trucking Safety Officer will primarily support DOT and trucking operations in the construction field and would be responsible for ensuring the health and safety of all workers on-site, minimizing risks, preventing accidents, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations. The role involves daily safety inspections including DOT inspections, incident reporting, hazard identification, scouting out entry sites for drivers to deliver at construction sites and ensuring the implementation of safety protocols. The Safety Officer will work closely with truck drivers, Safety team, President of the company, project managers, foremen, contractors, and workers to ensure the job site is safe and all drivers and as needed, oversee that our construction activities are performed in accordance with safety standards. Key Responsibilities: Safety Program Implementation & Oversight: • Develop, implement, and enforce safety policies and procedures specific to the construction jobsite, especially where DOT and Drivers are concerned., • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA regulations, local safety standards, and company safety policies., • Monitor Drivers activities to ensure safe work practices and hazard control measures are in place. As needed, oversee construction activities., • Perform daily vehicle inspections, walkthroughs of the jobsite to identify potential hazards and unsafe conditions, especially where it involves our drivers and fleet., • Document and report unsafe acts, conditions, vehicle repairs, and near misses, taking immediate corrective actions when necessary., • Ensure proper handling and storage of hazardous materials, ensuring adherence to safety guidelines., • Conduct safety orientations for new workers and subcontractors before they begin work on-site especially where it involves our drivers and their required training., • Lead regular toolbox talks and safety meetings to promote safety awareness and address any concerns., • Daily vehicle and equipment inspection spot checks., • Ensure all workers are trained in the proper use of equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE)., • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, including root cause analysis, especially where it involves a driver., • Prepare detailed reports documenting incidents, corrective actions, and follow-up procedures., • Collaborate with management to implement corrective actions and preventative measures based on incident findings., • Develop and maintain emergency response procedures, including fire, medical, and evacuation plans., • Ensure emergency response equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, eyewash stations) is readily available and functional., • Maintain and update all safety-related documentation, including safety logs, incident reports, training records, and safety audits., • Submit weekly or monthly safety reports to the Safety Manager or Project Manager, summarizing site safety performance., • Serve as the main point of contact for safety-related matters on the jobsite or for drivers., • Work closely with drivers, dispatch, safety team, supervisors, workers, and subcontractors to address safety concerns and ensure proper safety procedures are being followed., • Encourage a culture of safety by promoting open communication and reporting of safety hazards or unsafe practices., • High School Diploma or GED required. A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field is preferred., • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification (required)., • First Aid/CPR Certification (required)., • Additional certifications such as OSHA 500, Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) are a plus., • DOT knowledge and regulations for Commercial Drivers, • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in a construction safety role or DOT or law enforcement., • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety standards, and construction industry best practices., • Must be 21 years or older, • Must have a clean driving record; Recommended to bring 10-year MVR to interview., • Have a valid SC Driver’s license in good standing with clean MVR., • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills., • Ability to assess hazards and risks quickly and effectively., • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety management software/tools., • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail., • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions in the tri county area., • Ability to walk, stand, and inspect construction sites for long periods., • This position involves working on a construction jobsite, often in outdoor environments with varying weather conditions., • Pants, work rated steel toed boots and minimally 4-inch shirt sleeve is required. Additional PPE provided., • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and vest will be provided and must be worn at all times., • Competitive salary based on experience., • Pay: From $60,000 + depending on experience, • Benefits package including health, dental, vision, and retirement plans.
