Position Overview: The Fabricator/Welder builds, fits, and installs structural fabrications, equipment frames, guards, platforms, and process piping that support magnet manufacturing operations. This role partners closely with Engineering to interpret drawings, prototype new designs, and deliver high-quality, reliable fabrications on schedule. Success in this role requires expert layout and fit-up, proficiency in multiple welding processes (GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, SMAW; FCAW a plus), strong pipefitting skills, and a relentless commitment to safety and craftsmanship. Position Responsibilities: • Fabricate structural components (skids, frames, mezzanines, platforms, handrails, machine guards) from plate, tube, angle, and channel., • Perform pipefitting and welding on carbon and stainless-steel process lines (butt weld, socket weld, threaded); cut, bevel, prep, fit, and support piping to spec., • Read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, isometrics, and P verify dimensions and tolerances before and during build., • Execute welding using GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, and SMAW across all positions; select consumables, set parameters, and control heat input to meet quality requirements., • Conduct layout and fit-up using jigs/fixtures, squares, precision levels, lasers, and measuring tools to achieve precise alignment., • Cut and form material using oxy-fuel and plasma cutting, band saws, ironworker, press brake, shear, rollers, notchers, and grinders., • Perform in-process and final quality checks (visual inspection, dimensional verification); coordinate NDE as required; complete rework to standard., • Collaborate with Engineering on prototyping and new builds; provide manufacturability feedback, redline drawings, and suggest design improvements., • Rig, move, and install fabrications safely; operate forklifts and overhead cranes; follow proper rigging and signaling practices., • Maintain welding/fabrication equipment; perform basic troubleshooting and preventative maintenance on shop tools., • Complete documentation: redlines, weld maps, material heat/lot traceability (when required), and work order updates; record time and materials in SAP CMMS., • Follow all safety policies including LOTO, hot work permitting, ventilation, confined space protocols, and PPE; actively participate in 5S and housekeeping., • High school diploma or equivalent, 4+ years of industrial fabrication/welding experience in a manufacturing, maintenance, or shop environment., • Proficiency in GTAW/TIG (stainless and carbon) and GMAW/MIG; SMAW required; FCAW experience is a plus., • Strong blueprint reading skills including weld symbols; ability to work from isometric drawings and basic P&IDs., • Demonstrated pipefitting ability (takeoffs from isos, offsets, fit-up, and support installation) to meet quality/tolerance requirements., • Competent with layout math and precision measurement tools (tape, calipers, squares, angle finders, levels, lasers)., • Safe operation of forklifts, overhead cranes, and common fabrication tools; ability to obtain/maintain certifications., • AWS D1.1 (structural steel) and/or AWS D1.6 (stainless) certifications; ASME Section IX qualifications for pipe a plus., • Experience with sanitary tubing/orbital TIG, vacuum or high-purity gas systems, or cryogenic piping components., • Experience building jigs and fixtures; basic machining (sawing, light mill/lathe ops) for fit-up., • Familiarity with GD ability to interpret tolerance stacks in drawings., • Experience collaborating directly with engineers/designers; comfortable giving manufacturability feedback and executing redlines.
