For those pursuing a Naval Reactors Engineer position, the first step is Officer Development School (ODS) in Newport, RI - a 5-week course of instruction in Newport, RI, that provides a comprehensive and intense introduction to the responsibilities of being a Naval Officer. Upon completion of ODS, newly commissioned Ensigns move on to receive initial training at Naval Reactors Headquarters in Washington, D.C. (9 weeks of instruction) and Nuclear Power Training Unit (2 weeks of instruction) that form the basis for more advanced academic work. Officers then attend Bettis Reactor Engineering School (BRES), a 6-month postgraduate-level education in nuclear engineering at Naval Nuclear Labs just outside Pittsburgh, PA. This is followed by approximately three weeks spent gaining a working background at one of the Navy's shipyards in either Newport News, VA, or Bremerton, WA. Following the training pipeline, Naval Reactors Engineers are then assigned a Nuclear Engineer position with the group responsible for managing all technical aspects of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion program-reviewing, approving and confirming the design, operation and maintenance of nearly 100 nuclear reactors. Continuing education is required for the next six months as Engineers start in a junior role under a supervisor and rapidly advance to take on increasing responsibilities and complete their 5-year commitment. Job Description The design lead oversees the design team in successfully planning, executing, and delivering primarily large-scale projects. Responsibilities include: • Act as the primary design engineer of record and project lead for projects congruent with experience., • Provide regularly scheduled project reviews to review design progress, schedule, outstanding issues, etc. to provide guidance and support to design staff. • Sign and seal plan sets as appropriate for level of involvement in the project., • Create or direct schematic design layouts and establish initial design direction., • Plan out project tasks, priorities, timelines, and delegate tasks to project engineers and designers., • Perform QA/QC of delegated tasks., • Provide technical support and develop expertise of project engineers as necessary., • Communicate and coordinate with and between clients and design teams., • Provide design team assistance with complex RFIs and CA issues., • Provide guidance and/or generate Program of Requirements and Master Plans., • Help develop additional augmentation procedures and integration., • Generate proposals as necessary., • Meet deadlines., • Mentor staff on engineering design and project delivery., • Other duties as assigned and necessary. Education/ Experience: • Required: Bachelor of Science in Structural Engineering, • Preferred: Master's degree in Structural Engineering, • 5-10 years of engineering experience with project management experience, • Experience in the use of various structural design codes and specifications including but not limited to IBC, IRC, ASCE 7, ACI, PCI, AISC, NDS, and TMS, • Experience in design and detailing of various construction materials, including steel, cold formed metal framing, conventional and post-tensioned concrete, concrete masonry, and conventional and engineered wood, • Experience in the design and analysis of building structures, • Registered P.E. in the state of Texas, • Bluebeam, Autodesk REVIT, RISA, or RAM Structural System experience is a plus.
