Job Description Job Title: Construction Materials Testing Technician I Job Description This role focuses on performing construction materials testing, inspections, reporting, and sample transport on commercial and transportation construction projects based out of the Cedar Rapids area. You will receive in-depth training and support to earn industry certifications while working closely with project teams in the field. The position involves outdoor work in varying weather conditions, regular physical activity, and frequent interaction with both field and office staff to ensure that project specifications and quality standards are consistently met. Responsibilities • Perform routine to complex sampling and testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, and asphalt on commercial and transportation construction projects., • Conduct field and laboratory tests in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and applicable codes., • Provide clear, accurate documentation of field activities and test results, entering information daily in electronic formats., • Transport samples safely and efficiently between job sites, laboratories, and other project locations., • Work closely with the project team and lead technicians to ensure project specifications, quality requirements, and schedules are followed., • Support the interpretation of test results and communicate findings to project staff in a timely and professional manner., • Assist with the training and mentoring of junior staff and new technicians as needed., • Read and interpret construction plans and specifications to understand testing requirements and project scope., • Maintain testing equipment and tools in good working order and report any issues promptly., • At least 1 year of experience in construction or landscaping, or closely related hands-on field work., • Experience with construction materials testing or a strong interest and aptitude to learn testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, and asphalt., • Excellent construction plan reading skills to understand project requirements and testing locations., • Demonstrated technical aptitude and ability to learn and apply testing procedures and standards., • Strong verbal and written communication skills for clear documentation and effective coordination with project teams., • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions on active construction projects., • Ability to lift and carry 50–75 pounds on a regular basis as part of daily field activities., • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for travel to and from job sites., • Ability to meet motor vehicle record (MVR) standards required for driving on company business., • Hands-on experience with concrete, carpentry, framing, or concrete finishing in a construction environment., • Prior exposure to construction materials testing in the field or laboratory., • DOT or ICC certifications in materials testing or inspection are a plus., • Experience working in busy construction or data center build environments., • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately record and report test data. Work Environment You will work primarily in a construction and field-testing environment alongside a team of approximately eight materials testers. The role is based around active commercial, transportation, and data center construction sites, which can be busy and fast paced. Work takes place outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve uneven terrain, noise, and typical construction hazards, with appropriate safety practices in place. Hours can include extended or nontraditional shifts depending on project schedules and testing needs. The work is physically active, including frequent lifting of 50–75 pounds, handling materials, and moving testing equipment. You will use electronic devices for daily reporting and documentation, as well as standard construction materials testing equipment in the field and laboratory. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr.
