Job Description Opportunity Overview Our organization is excited to announce an opening for a fellowship-trained head and neck oncologic surgeon/microvascular free flap surgeon. This role is part of a dynamic and expanding team of specialized surgeons within a collaborative otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) department located at a leading medical center in San Francisco, CA. Our practice combines the benefits of community-based private practice with the extensive support of a large multispecialty organization, alongside a dedicated team of physician assistants and nurse practitioners focused on patient care. The surgical team consists of six experienced surgeons: the director of head and neck oncologic surgery, a specialist in microvascular free flap surgery, an expert in laryngology, a facial plastics and reconstructive surgery specialist, a neurotologist, and a general ENT surgeon. We are also in the process of recruiting additional specialists, including a rhinologist/sinus surgeon and another laryngologist with a focus on bronchoesophagology. Currently, three microvascular free flap surgeons support our practice, with plans to expand the team to five or six dedicated head and neck microvascular reconstructive surgeons. Our department includes four physician assistants and one nurse practitioner who provide daily support in clinics, operating rooms, and inpatient care. Additionally, we have four speech and swallow therapists, one of whom specializes in dysphagia and head and neck cancer, with plans to add another as needed. A registered nurse is dedicated to navigating head and neck cancer patients through their care journey. We are also committed to academic pursuits, including research, education, mentorship, and leadership within the health system, and we plan to host an annual continuing medical education (CME) course in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The role encompasses the full range of head and neck oncologic and microvascular free flap surgical practices. Regular tumor boards for head and neck, melanoma, and endocrine cases are held within the medical center, featuring specialists in radiation oncology, medical oncology, radiology, nuclear medicine, pathology, dermatology, oral surgery, endocrinology, and nurse navigators. Common procedures include microvascular free flap reconstruction, thyroidectomy/parathyroidectomy, neck dissection, lymph node excision, parotidectomy, partial glossectomy, mandibulectomy, maxillectomy, single port transoral robotic surgery, skin cancer excisions with sentinel lymph node biopsy, laryngectomy, parapharyngeal space tumor dissection, skull base surgery, sialendoscopy, tracheostomy, panendoscopy, and local-regional reconstruction. In-clinic and intraoperative ultrasound performed by the surgeon is an integral part of the program. We also have integrated speech language pathology services that work concurrently with surgeons. Collaboration is common within our OHNS group and extends to facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, neurotology, and laryngology, as well as general plastic surgery, dermatology, endocrinology, neurointerventional radiology, body interventional radiology, and neurosurgery. Hospitalists and intensivists manage all inpatient care at our facilities. The expectation is for two to three weeks of EMTALA ER/Consult call per year and four to five weeks of OHNS practice call, with overlapping coverage. The head and neck oncologic surgery practice primarily operates at the Van Ness medical center, which opened in 2019. There is significant autonomy in clinical practice regarding direction, patient volume, scheduling, and vacation.
