Job DescriptionJob Title: Shipfitter Job Description As a Shipfitter, you will lay out and fabricate metal structural parts such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, bracing them in position within the hull of a ship for riveting or welding. You will work from blueprints or templates, using scribes and hand tools to accurately lay out positions of parts on metal. Your expertise will involve marking reference lines like center, buttock, and frame lines, positioning parts in the hull, and aligning them using various tools. You will also mark locations for drilling and install temporary fasteners for welding or riveting. Additionally, you will install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips. You may prepare molds and templates for nonstandard parts and tack weld clips and brackets prior to permanent welding. Your role may also include rolling, bending, flanging, cutting, and shaping plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts. Responsibilities • Lay out and fabricate metal structural parts within the hull of a ship., • Work from blueprints or templates using scribes and hand tools., • Mark reference lines such as center, buttock, and frame lines., • Position and align parts using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls., • Mark locations for drilling and install temporary fasteners., • Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories., • Prepare molds and templates for nonstandard parts., • Tack weld clips and brackets prior to permanent welding., • Roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and heavy metal parts.Essential Skills, • Ability to lay out, cut, and align parts using blueprints and drawings., • Proficiency with hand tools and equipment such as torches and plasma cutters., • Experience in shipfitting and welding techniques., • Capability to read and interpret blueprints.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Minimum of 3 years experience for 2nd class shipfitters., • Minimum of 7 years experience as a marine electrician for 1st class shipfitters., • Stable job history in shipfitting or related field. Work Environment Work primarily at naval bases, requiring DBIDS access. The role involves using various tools and equipment provided by the employer, including grinders and safety gear. The work environment emphasizes safety, requiring hard hats, safety glasses, and steel toe shoes. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Norfolk, Virginia. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $25.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
