Global Support and Development is seeking to hire a Prehospital Medical Specialist (PHMS) / Paramedic.The position is full-time, in-person, and located at HQ in Charlotte, N.C. Reporting to the Field Operations Team Leads, The Prehospital Medical Specialist (PHMS) supports the delivery of high-quality medical care during disaster response and resilience missions, and will operate as an integrated member of the Field Response Team to enhance mission readiness and effectiveness. The PHMS will act as the lead medical provider for Field Response and Maritime Access Teams. This role will be responsible for providing expert medical guidance and consultation to team leads and GSD leadership, along with supporting the health and safety of team members through direct medical care and advisory support in the field. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Conduct health needs assessments during disaster responses;, • Provide medical risk and medical threat assessments (pre-deployment & real-time);, • Support Field Response Teams during response operations as a Response Specialist and provide Forward Response Team (FRT) medical support as required;, • Provide medical support to the Maritime Access Teams operations as required;, • Participate in After Action Reviews (AARs), as well as collect and prepare data utilized in AARs, MEAL assessments, and strategic initiatives;, • Provide non-medical operational support to local healthcare systems (EOC/ICS);, • Identify gaps in medical infrastructure and support with Medical Mission Ready Packages;, • Provide medical administrative support, including protocol review and development;, • Directly support GSD disaster response and capacity-strengthening activities;, • Participate in medical competency training and organizational training to maintain role-specific skills including, but not limited to, rapid needs assessments, the use of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), debris clearance, team security and safety, internal team rescue, internal team communications, and internal team sustainment;, • Prompt and action GSDs core values of accountability, humility, and integrity in all work we conduct;, • Promote good stewardship of financial and other resources to achieve maximum benefit to those impacted by disaster or at risk of impact; and, • Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Required Experience: • Six (6) years of relevant experience in a prehospital medical role;, • Two (2) years of program management experience in austere/resource constrained environments outside of the continental United States (OCONUS);, • Three (3) years of relevant experience operating as part of a team in a disaster response or humanitarian setting; and, • Two (2) years experience building/training/leading teams in high-risk and/or austere, resource constrained environments. Required Education: • Degree/education required for licensed practice in the State of North Carolina. Professional Licenses/Certifications: • Valid state licensure (all licenses must be valid through the end of 2026) and board certification (as applicable);, • Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) with prehospital/limited-resource and austere experience (Must have the ability to obtain a North Carolina PA or NP license); or, • Paramedic (including SOF medic, PJ medic, Independent Duty Corpsman, IDMT); or, • Flight Nurse or Flight Paramedic (with on-scene and transport experience); or, • Registered Nurse meeting NREMT-Paramedic standards with advanced prehospital and austere practice; and, • Registered Nurse or Flight Nurse must have ability to obtain and maintain NREMT-P and North Carolina EMS license and will be required to perform a minimum number of Paramedic role clinical shifts to maintain competency as provided by GSD; and, • Must have (or be in the process of renewing) the following certifications:, • BLS (Healthcare Provider), • ACLS, • PALS, • PHTLS (TCCC/TECC), • ATLS/ITLS, • Must have or be able to gain and maintain Diver Medical Technician (DMT) certification via the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology, which includes maintaining the ability to work in a hyperbaric chamber environment for diving operations; and, • Ability to pass medical clearance for hyperbaric exposure (dive chamber); and, • Certified Flight Paramedic (FP-C), Certified Wilderness Paramedic (WP-C), Certified Critical Care Paramedic (CCP-C), Certified Tactical Paramedic (TP-C), Wilderness First Responder (WFR), Advanced Wilderness Life Support (AWLS), FEMA ICS 100 - 800 are desired. Knowledge/Skills: • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills;, • Ability to balance operational and medical needs;, • Excellent written and verbal communication;, • Patient-centered care and ethical decision-making;, • Experience in challenging cultural/situational contexts;, • Familiarity with humanitarian principles and/or humanitarian work;, • Team-focused and community-oriented;, • Proficiency in Google Workspace and collaboration tools such as Airtable or relevant dashboards;, • Strong organizational skills and the ability to rapidly shift tasks;, • Experience working and/or traveling domestically and internationally; and, • Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is preferred. Working Conditions During Non-Deployment Periods • Work is performed in an office setting and is generally sedentary, but may involve movement (e.g., walking, standing or otherwise being mobile throughout the office) for brief periods of time;, • Ability to use hands, reach, and independently lift and move items weighing up to 20pounds, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects;, • Ability to bend and stoop;, • Ability to sit and view a computer screen for extended periods of time;, • Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity to operate computer and other office equipment;, • Ability to communicate effectively with others. Working Conditions During Deployment Periods (Including Rapid Response) • May be regularly exposed to and required to work in varying outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold, heavy rainfall, and other extreme weather events;, • May be required to engage in irregular travel and / or work schedules, which may include extended hours exceeding 8 or 12 hours in a day for prolonged periods outside of the control of the individual;, • While wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) which is required and provided by GSD:, • Work may be conducted near moving mechanical parts, which could include exposure to loud noises;, • Work may be conducted near and include potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals; or, • Work may be conducted in areas that include exposure to the risk of electrical shock or vibration., • Ability to obtain necessary travel documents and fulfill any other travel requirements (including an active passport, visa requirements, vaccinations, etc.);, • This role may include deployments to support natural disaster response efforts within hazardous, dynamic, and unstable environments (economically/environmentally) in pre- and post- disaster scenarios, which could include, among other conditions: lack of access to medical care, exposure to critical incidents (including severe injury, death, traumatic encounters, and/or mental strain), and uncommon sleeping arrangements (i.e. not in a hotel, could include close living quarters and cohabitation);, • GSDs nutritional environment contains milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat products. Ability to make dietary accommodations may be limited. Potential exposure to food borne allergens; and, • Employees may be required for this role to work upon our Humanitarian Vessel for up to 30 consecutive days. The vessels working environment entails performing in conditions inherent to vessel travel, including but not limited to: steep and narrow stairs and living spaces, close quarters including cohabitation, sharp surfaces, metal gangways and ladders, heavy doors, European-type plugs and wiring (220-240v, 60Hz) which cannot support all American appliances, in addition to bright and flashing lights, loud noises, nuts and shellfish exposure, poor weather, movements which can trigger motion sickness, and / or limited access to hospital / definitive care. This setting involves various sea conditions, including but not limited to rough seas, adverse weather, and potential for sea sickness.
