Job Description Job Title: CDL A or B driver / Heavy Equipment Operator Job Description The Environmental Field Technician responds to environmental emergencies and supports field and office operations related to spill response, hazardous material handling, and site clean-up. This role operates a variety of mechanical equipment, performs manual labor in challenging outdoor conditions, and ensures accurate documentation of field activities. The technician works closely with supervisors, team members, and the public to safely conduct clean-up, decontamination, and environmental remediation tasks. Responsibilities • Respond to environmental emergencies within a 24-hour period and support spill response operations., • Perform technical field work and related office tasks, including preparing reports and completing Field Dailies., • Operate mechanical and heavy equipment such as vacuum trucks, super dusters, forklifts, pallet jacks, lift gates, trucks, trailers, roll-off trucks, dump trucks, excavators, skid-steers, bulldozers, tankers, and other equipment as needed., • Conduct clean-up and decontamination procedures at spill sites and other environmental project locations., • Maintain inventory lists and ensure proper tracking of equipment, materials, and supplies., • Understand and apply spill response terminology, principles, and procedures during field operations., • Apply basic knowledge of proper storage, treatment, and disposal of hazardous materials collected during clean-up activities., • Recognize potential hazards associated with hazardous wastes and follow appropriate safety protocols., • Field phone calls and communicate effectively with Field Supervisors and other team members regarding project status and needs., • Perform limited chemical tests and work safely around a variety of chemicals and hazardous substances., • Prepare equipment for field deployment and ensure it is properly decontaminated and maintained after use., • Keep accurate field log books, documenting activities, observations, and equipment usage., • Perform manual labor tasks such as sweeping, shoveling, pushing, pulling, drum processing and sampling, and general clean-up., • Participate as a spill crew member in environmental response and remediation projects., • Perform tank cleaning, including work in confined spaces such as petroleum tanks and wastewater treatment tanks., • Support general construction activities related to environmental and heavy industrial projects., • Perform equipment decontamination, vehicle and equipment maintenance, and ensure proper use of all levels of personal protective equipment (PPE)., • Follow written and verbal instructions and adhere to proper safety procedures at all times., • Work effectively as a team member on various types of projects, collaborating with drivers, equipment operators, and technicians., • Uphold the ethics and values of the company in all interactions and work activities., • Perform other duties as necessary to support environmental, construction, and heavy industrial projects. Essential Skills • High school diploma or GED equivalent., • Ability to understand and follow both written and verbal instructions., • Ability to learn and adhere to proper safety procedures in environmental and industrial settings., • Ability to work in all weather and environmental conditions, including sun, rain, cold, swampy areas, ditches, and dirt., • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of bulky equipment., • Ability to bend, stoop, sit, and stand for extended periods during manual labor tasks., • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to operate commercial vehicles, strongly preferred., • Experience performing labor-intensive work in environmental, construction, contracting, or heavy industrial environments (1–2 years preferred)., • Ability to operate mechanical equipment and heavy industrial machinery safely and effectively., • Basic understanding of spill response terminology and principles., • Basic knowledge of hazardous material storage, treatment, and disposal practices., • Ability to perform limited chemical tests and work around a variety of chemicals., • Ability to prepare equipment and maintain accurate field log books., • Strong teamwork skills and ability to function as a member of a multi-person crew., • Effective communication skills for interacting with supervisors, clients, the public, and other employees., • Ability to use and work in all levels of personal protective equipment (PPE). Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience as a spill crew member or in environmental emergency response is preferred., • Experience with drum processing and sampling is an advantage., • Experience in tank cleaning, including confined space entry, is preferred., • General construction or heavy industrial work is beneficial., • Experience with vehicle and equipment maintenance and equipment decontamination is preferred., • Ability to operate heavy equipment such as excavators, skid-steers, bulldozers, forklifts, and other machinery is a plus., • Experience operating roll-off trucks, dump trucks, tankers, and similar equipment is advantageous., • Problem-solving skills to address field challenges and unexpected conditions., • Comfort working around hazardous chemicals and in noisy, heavy industrial environments., • Demonstrated ability to uphold strong ethical standards and company values., • Willingness to work extended hours, including overtime and occasional weekends, based on project needs. Work Environment This role is primarily based outdoors and in industrial settings, with frequent work in very hot temperatures and exposure to varying weather conditions. Technicians work in confined spaces and around hazardous chemicals, including petroleum tanks and wastewater treatment tanks, and may perform tasks at elevated heights and in noisy conditions. The environment involves regular use of heavy industrial equipment such as vacuum trucks, super dusters, forklifts, pallet jacks, lift gates, trucks, trailers, excavators, skid-steers, bulldozers, roll-off trucks, dump trucks, and tankers. Crews typically consist of 3–5 people, including a driver, equipment operator, and technicians, promoting close teamwork on each project. Technicians average about 55 hours per week, with some weeks closer to 40 hours and others up to 80 hours depending on project demands. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, with additional Saturdays and Sundays on occasion to meet operational needs. Appropriate PPE is required and provided for all levels of hazard exposure, and employees should be prepared for physically demanding work in industrial, construction, and environmental field conditions. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $27.00/hr.
