Hydraulic Modeller – Water Networks (Consulting) Location: West Midlands (hybrid: 2–3 days/week on client site) Salary: £45,000–£50,000 base (DOE) + expenses About the role Join a consulting team that blends hydraulic modelling with delivery on the ground. You’ll be embedded with water-utility stakeholders, building and calibrating clean-water network models (DMAs, trunk mains) and—crucially—turning model outputs into clear actions for control rooms, planners, streetworks/permitting and field teams. Expect a mix of feasibility, operational support, and capital planning, all aligned to Ofwat outcomes (leakage, PCC, supply interruptions). What you’ll do • Build, maintain and calibrate hydraulic models (InfoWorks WS Pro/ICM, EPANET, WaterGEMS/WaterCAD) using SCADA, pressure/flow loggers and AMI/AMR data., • Run scenario analysis: pressure optimisation/PRV set-points, DMA splits/rezoning, trunk main shutdowns, resilience routes, storage/pumping policies, and developer-services impacts., • Produce operational plans: valve operations, PRV settings, outage playbooks and event simulations to minimise customer minutes lost., • Translate results into stakeholder-ready decisions (maps, short option notes, costs/risks/benefits) and present to leakage managers, control room and planners., • Contribute to benefit tracking & evidence: before/after analyses, KPIs, and regulator-grade documentation., • Support streetworks & scheduling by forecasting network impacts and advising on sequencing to reduce customer disruption. What you’ll bring • HNC/HND/Degree in Engineering/Water/Environmental (or similar)., • Experience in clean water network hydraulics (not rivers/coastal) within a utility, consultancy, or contractor., • Hands-on with at least one major tool (InfoWorks WS Pro/ICM, EPANET, WaterGEMS/WaterCAD); GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS) useful; Python/SQL a plus., • Clear communicator who can explain assumptions and trade-offs to non-modellers., • Full UK driving licence; right to work in the UK. Career path • Hydraulic Modeller (this role): Own sub-zones/DMAs end-to-end; deliver robust calibration and scenario options with actionable recommendations., • Senior/Lead (progression): Set modelling standards and QA, mentor juniors, shape multi-scenario business cases, and integrate modelling with dashboards/ops cadence. Success measures Leakage and PCC reduction attributable to pressure optimisation; fewer and shorter supply interruptions; first-time-right planned works; accepted regulatory evidence; stakeholder adoption of model-led plans.
