This is a temporary, remote-working contract, offering up to £31.73 per hour – 40 hrs/week – (PAYE), until 31/12/2026. Whilst you can perform your duties remotely, you MUST be based in the UK with the necessary rights to work in the country (no relocation, or sponsorship can be offered). What You'll Do: • Perform in-depth linguistic analyses on extensive datasets to uncover critical patterns and insights., • Conduct comprehensive linguistic error analyses of AI model outputs, identifying the most frequent and severe error categories., • Develop and refine guidelines for human annotation tasks and other AI projects, including those focused on translation., • Lead typological and sociolinguistic research across a broad spectrum of languages, highlighting their unique characteristics and commonalities., • Execute linguistic analyses for Responsible AI initiatives, addressing toxic language, hate speech, gender bias, and other cultural biases in massively multilingual contexts., • Conduct linguistic literature reviews on topics adjacent to natural language processing and synthesize key findings., • Evaluate the quality of deliverables from various vendors, pinpointing error patterns and providing actionable feedback., • Serve as a subject matter expert, offering guidance on all aspects of linguistic knowledge, including typology, morpho-syntax, sociolinguistics, classification, phonetics/phonology, and pragmatics., • Engage and collaborate with native speakers across diverse languages to enrich research and development efforts., • Effectively communicate complex linguistic analysis results to engineering and research science teams., • Contribute to advanced language-related AI research projects, including those focused on multilingual systems and natural language processing., • Manage multiple research projects concurrently, ensuring timely and high-quality deliverables. Must-Have Qualifications: • Graduate degree in Linguistics or a closely related field., • Experience in a relevant linguistic or AI research role., • Native-level proficiency in a language other than English, with a strong preference for Hindi, and in-depth knowledge of other Indo-European or Dravidian languages of India., • Exceptional written and spoken communication skills, particularly in business and research contexts., • Proficiency in Python coding and the ability to query databases using SQL., • Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex requests and perform effectively under pressure., • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize, plan, track work, and report progress., • Very firm grasp of key linguistic fields: language typology, syntax, morphology, sociolinguistics (especially dialectology and discourse analysis), corpus linguistics, writing systems, pragmatics, and phonology., • Experience applying basic Natural Language Processing techniques., • Experience working cross-functionally and collaborating with machine learning, natural language processing, or software engineers, or data scientists., • Experience contributing to research papers., • Demonstrated excessive modeling experience., • No known conflicts of interest in advanced language technologies research, as this role contributes to research papers. Preferred Qualifications: • PhD in Linguistics or a related field., • Background or specialization in corpus linguistics., • Experience with field work., • Working knowledge of international language-classification standards.
