The Role With the portfolio of development sites identified and under exclusive control, the main responsibilities of the Environment Manager will be to support the Development Team in site appraisal and design activities, and lead on environmental and biodiversity advice and input in connection with the successful delivery of each site through the planning and development process. This work will be focused around ecological, ornithological and environmental surveys and mitigation and include net benefit for biodiversity, habitat management, and wider cultural/nature enhancement measures which align with Welsh Government objectives, legislation and planning policy, and are progressed in such a way to meet the required commercial expectations, are deliverable and buildable, and in line with programme. SALARY: Starting from £65,000 per annum (dependent on skills and experience) REPORTS TO: Strategic Planning & Consents Director LOCATION: Cardiff, Wales Main Responsibilities: • Manage the environmental aspects of the Bute Portfolio and inform the design efforts of projects, helping ensure effective targets and goals are set and all objectives/plans are met/ exceeded;, • Provide oversight and management support of relevant consultants to identify and address environmental constraints and opportunities within the portfolio;, • Provide guidance and support to project managers on environmental issues and protocols, including advice on key environmental risks and key document reviews (including Environmental Statements and associated technical assessment reports);, • Identify and progress project mitigation and enhancement opportunities in consultation with third party advisors, relevant external groups and present such proposals internally in an effort to deliver these on time and on budget;, • Establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and local communities with the aim to maximise the benefits of the development portfolio;, • Understand, assess, and consider the key environmental indicators which determine what constitutes a viable energy park project and play a lead role in increasing the consentability of all sites; and, • Provide support and advice to the Community Benefit Team in relation to nature and net benefits for biodiversity within their aspect of work. Key Accountabilities: • Collaborate with and advise the wider Development Team in regard to potential environmental constraints that may hinder the maximisation of development rights and consentability of each site and work to provide solutions against identified project risks;, • Lead in the identification and design of environmental initiatives which are to be brought forward as part of each Energy Park’s planning application;, • Provide input and a technical review of appropriate sections of EIAs, technical appendices and scoping reports etc, to ensure compliance with relevant local and national policy as well as ensuring each projects aligns with Bute’s goals and aspirations;, • Supporting project managers in overseeing external environmental consultants, to include the services associated with statutory stakeholder consultation, project, scoping, EIA, and planning application submissions; and, • Accountable for ensuring project documentation and consultation is aligned with environmental policy and relevant regulations - reviewing and approving environmental plans/chapters to ensure they align with Bute’s objectives What you can expect as a Bute Energy Colleague • Hybrid working available with the option to work from home or in the office as needed., • Flexitime with the ability to work core hours and take time back in lieu throughout the week., • Fridays are allocated as ‘no meeting’ days to ensure down time at the end of the week., • 28 days annual leave, plus bank holidays., • Private Medical Insurance from day 1 with cover for immediate family including spouse or partner and children, including direct mental health pathways and support and travel insurance., • Employer pension contributions up to 7%., • Electric car scheme via salary sacrifice., • Cycle to Work Scheme, • Tech scheme – discounts on latest technology including laptops, phones ipads for personal use, • Life assurance cover and income protection., • Travel insurance., • Suite of enhanced policies and provisions to support colleagues through all the moments that matter., • Regular team socials, activities, sporting events and charity fundraisers. What we look for in return: Knowledge & Skills: • An in-depth understanding of the environmental/regulatory opportunities and challenges facing all stages of wind project development and the renewable industry;, • Detailed knowledge of the consenting drivers for a successful wind farm development and understanding of key project risks;, • Deep understanding of the planning system, EIA and environmental policy relating to renewable energy development;, • Deep understanding of the ecological, cultural and environmental initiatives which represent a best in class approach to wind farm and wider site design;, • Excellent interpersonal skills;, • An entrepreneurial approach and problem-solving abilities;, • Strong personal resilience and hugely adaptable to situations;, • Excellent organisational and co-ordination skills;, • Handling and co-ordinating inputs from external consultants and project team members; and, • Excellent influencing and negotiation skills. Experience & Qualifications • 7 years’ experience working in-house in a development company or consultancy;, • Degree in an environmental science based subject or equivalent;, • Track record of successfully leading on the strategy and implementation of environmental initiatives and design within resource and budget constraints;, • Successfully dealing with planning authorities and other third party project stakeholders, including landowners, external consultants, interest groups and voluntary organisations; and, • Input to the production and delivery of certain aspects of large-scale infrastructure planning applications, Environmental Statements, and long term environmental/habitat/net gain plans.
