The post will be full-time and will be subject to the nationally agreed Consultant Contract (October 2003) and the Terms and Conditions of Service governing the appointment of hospital medical and dental staff in England or as subsequently varied by collective agreement. The Consultant contract will be held by the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Programmed Activities will be undertaken in the Birmingham Dental Hospital and Community Paediatric Dental Service clinics across Birmingham and the Black Country. Provision of treatment service for more complex cases that are referred, working in close liaison with medical, surgical and dental colleagues in order to provide an integrated service. Provision of specialist care under sedation for children with behavioural problems and dental phobias. To undertake new patient assessment clinics. To carry out personal treatment sessions on an outpatient basis with access to inhalation sedation if required. (Nursing support is available to further develop intravenous conscious sedation service for anxious adolescents). Support the present consultant body in the management of patients with special needs and the provision of comprehensive oral care for this group of patients under general anaesthesia as well as on an outpatient basis. Further development of the provision of paediatric general anaesthesia in District General Hospitals, where the service is commissioned to provide them To develop multidisciplinary clinics within the community setting where required. To provide consultant support for junior staff clinical sessions together with other consultant colleagues. The post holder will be required to apply for a performer number if not already held. To support the clinical teaching of speciality trainees and dental core training programme, providing consultant supervision. To provide supervision of undergraduate dental and school of hygiene and therapy students as appropriate. The Community Paediatric Dental Service delivers specialist and specialised dental care across a wide geographic area, throughout Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall. General anaesthetic services are also provided in 2 district general hospitals in Walsall and Sandwell. Be Part of Our Team... The priority for this post is the provision of a Paediatric Dentistry Consultant Service for patients referred from hospital colleagues, general medical and dental practitioners and colleagues within BCHC. The post will promote the provision of a more seamless paediatric dental service across the primary and secondary care boundary. The post holder will also be required to support development of the community paediatric dental service and colleagues within the department. The post holder will be involved in undergraduate teaching to dentists and therapists and also support the post graduate specialist paediatric training. At the commencement of the contract the successful candidate would be expected to agree a job plan with the Head of Service. Please see the attached job description and person specification for more detailed information in regards to this post. • Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC), • On the GDC Specialist Register in Paediatric Dentistry, • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent, • Successful completion of ISFE examination or equivalent or be in the final 6 months of training at the time of interview, • MSc or equivalent, • Successful completion of an SAC-approved 5-year minimum training programme in Paediatric Dentistry, or within 6 months of completion, or equivalent, • Experience of working within the Community Dental Services, • Experience of post graduate teaching and undergraduate teaching, • Training in teaching, • Publication in referred journals, • Interest and experience in the broad range of Paediatric Dentistry, • Current holders of a substantive NHS or honorary NHS consultant contract in Paediatric Dentistry are eligible to be shortlisted, • Applicants who are Nationals from another European country are elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 years minimum training period in the National Health Service for Paediatric Dentistry, • Research relevant to the Paediatric Dentistry specialty, • Ability to think creatively and prioritise, • Ability to debate highly complex issues with peers and senior colleagues as well as with subordinates, • Ability to lead a highly complex, diverse Division and set a clear direction / vision and inspire others through effective leadership skills, • Ability to win followers and drive change at all levels, • Team building, motivational skills, • Detailed understanding of the clinical implications of health and social care policy and related issues, • Ability to foster an inclusive approach, delegate and motivate people to achieve organisational goals, • High developed negotiating skills with an ability to use a range of influencing styles to achieve the required results, • Knowledge and understanding of clinical information and its impact on the service, • Ability to develop & deliver effective reports and presentations, • Awareness of clinical service management issues, • Experience of service management, • Ability to obtain and retain the support of senior clinical colleagues, • Evidence of significant achievement and personal contribution to organisational success, • Strong participative and supportive management style whilst also able to direct and take difficult decisions and act assertively, • Ability to manage under pressure, • Personal integrity and able to work ethically, • Positive, energetic, enthusiastic in outlook and able to set a good example, • Work independently, • Team Skills, • Strategic thinker and able to set longer term goals, • Political awareness and diplomacy, • Willingness to devote time to the role, including attendance at appropriate meetings, • Requirement of an NHS performer number, • Full driving licence with access to own transport, • Ability to work flexibly In accordance with UK Home Office requirements, Band 2 clinical and non-clinical roles and Band 3 Non-Clinical roles are not eligible for sponsorship.
