Lead Mechanical Technician (LMech) Role Overview We are seeking an experienced and technically skilled Lead Mechanical Technician to oversee the safe, efficient, and compliant delivery of planned and reactive maintenance within a critical environment. This hands-on supervisory role combines leadership with active engineering responsibilities, including managing on-site mechanical operations, supervising internal technicians and specialist subcontractors, participating in a shift rota, and supporting site leadership to maintain the highest standards of safety, reliability, and technical performance. Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership Act as Deputy to the Technical Services Supervisor (TSS) when required Participate in emergency escalation procedures and provide out-of-hours technical support Ensure full compliance with Safe Systems of Work, including RAMS, LOTO, and Permit-to-Work processes Maintain required site certifications and operate as Authorised Person (AP) where appointed Promote a strong culture of safety, professionalism, and technical excellence Maintenance & Engineering Oversee and undertake routine, reactive, and emergency maintenance of mechanical and critical infrastructure systems Diagnose, rectify, and escalate mechanical faults to minimise operational impact Coordinate maintenance activities with the Helpdesk/DigiHub and liaise with end users for access Ensure all works, self-delivered or subcontracted, meet engineering standards and industry best practice Support minor projects, plant upgrades, and asset replacement programmes Team & Stakeholder Management Allocate resources effectively to meet service levels and deadlines Mentor technicians and apprentices, supporting skills development and performance Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, engineers, and suppliers Foster a team culture focused on safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement Reporting & Compliance Provide operational updates to the Technical Services Supervisor, highlighting risks and resource needs Accurately record all maintenance activities in the CMMS Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, site procedures, and internal engineering standards Complete mandatory training and maintain technical competencies Required Qualifications & Experience Education & Training NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline Authorised Person (AP) certification desirable Experience Minimum 5 years’ hands-on mechanical maintenance experience Experience in a critical or high-reliability environment highly desirable Technical & Systems Knowledge Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills across mechanical systems Sound knowledge of engineering standards, statutory compliance, and industry best practice Competent in Microsoft Office and CMMS platforms Professional Attributes Self-motivated with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Strong commitment to health & safety, operational excellence, and continuous professional development This role offers an excellent opportunity for a skilled mechanical professional to take a leadership position within a critical environment, combining technical challenge, responsibility, and long-term career development.
