Job Description Job Title: Marine Electrician Job Description This role supports U.S. Naval ships by performing electrical installation, troubleshooting, and repair of cabling, equipment, and C5ISR systems on ships, boats, and other marine equipment. You will work as part of an active team in a shipyard environment, carrying out hands-on electrical tasks, conducting tests, and ensuring safe, reliable operation of critical shipboard systems. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity with consistent weekday hours and significant potential for ongoing work based on performance. Responsibilities • Perform electrical work on ships, boats, and marine equipment, including installation, maintenance, and repair of shipboard electrical systems., • Troubleshoot electrical issues and correct malfunctions on naval and marine systems., • Conduct various electrical tests or experiments, including setup and operation of standard test equipment, and make minor modifications to test setups or procedures as needed., • Select, set up, and operate standard test equipment, accurately record test data, and document results., • Repair electrical wiring to restore power to ship engines, navigation systems, and other critical systems., • Secure work areas aboard vessels to prevent electrical hazards and maintain a safe work environment., • Maintain specified records of engineering data such as test results, drawings, and related documentation., • Perform computations by substituting numbers into specified formulas, and plot data to draw simple curves and graphs., • Carry out routine tests such as tensile or hardness tests using simple test equipment, adjusting equipment as needed and recording test data., • Install and attach fiber optic, RJ-45, DB-type, and multipin connectors as required for shipboard systems., • Read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics at both tradesperson and apprentice levels to support installation and repair work., • Assist with layout and cutting of electrical enclosures, perform electrical hook-ups, and use multiple types of meters to verify system performance., • Perform layout and mounting of small equipment and components in accordance with drawings and specifications., • Band, pack, and install MCTs/RISE and perform space closeouts as part of cable and penetration work., • Conduct preliminary QA testing, including ground checks and RSPT testing, to verify system integrity., • Use basic hand tools, meters, and QA documents correctly and safely in daily tasks., • Implement and follow safety programs and procedures, actively participate in safety surveillances and walk-throughs, and support SRAR and compliance requirements., • Provide QCI instruction and guidance to lower-level technicians as needed., • Apply NAVSEA standards, concepts, practices, and procedures in electrical repair, fabrication, and installation work., • Work effectively in high heat spaces, on shipyard dry dock stairs and ladders, and in kneeling or crouching positions under false decking for cable layout and installation., • Lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment (up to 50 pounds, with the majority of the shift involving up to 40 pounds) while standing, crouching, or walking., • Travel as required to Newport News, VA to support shipboard installation and repair projects., • Experience performing electrical work in a related field, including shipboard electrical experience., • Ability to obtain an OSHA 10 certification., • Hands-on experience attaching fiber optic, RJ-45, and DB-type connectors., • Competence working with multipin connectors, including installation and troubleshooting., • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings at tradesperson level., • Ability to read and interpret drawings at apprentice level for basic layout and installation tasks., • Experience with preliminary QA testing, including ground checks and RSPT testing., • Ability to perform layout and cutting of electrical enclosures and complete electrical hook-ups., • Knowledge and use of multiple electrical meters for testing and troubleshooting., • Ability to band and pack MCTs and RISE systems and perform space closeouts., • Basic knowledge of hand tools, meters, and QA documents used in electrical installation and repair., • Familiarity with NAVSEA standard concepts, practices, and procedures for electrical repair, fabrication, and installation., • Ability to implement safety programs and follow SRAR and related safety and quality requirements., • Ability to provide QCI instruction to lower-level technicians and support their development., • Physical ability to work in high heat spaces and climb shipyard dry dock stairs and ladders., • Ability to work in kneeling, crouching, standing, and walking positions for extended periods, including under false decking for cable runs., • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with most work involving carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 40 pounds throughout the shift., • Strong attention to safety and adherence to safe work practices., • Ability to travel to Newport News, VA as required for project needs., • Multipin certification or formal training in multipin connector installation and testing., • Active DoD Secret clearance., • Completed OSHA certification (including OSHA 10 or higher)., • Fiber optic certification or formal training in fiber optic cabling and termination., • Prior experience working with C5ISR system installations or similar complex shipboard systems., • Experience in an electrician mate or electrical installation role in a marine, naval, or industrial environment., • Experience performing QA inspections and documenting results in accordance with established standards. Work Environment You will work in a large shipyard environment supporting naval vessels, primarily at a facility associated with major shipbuilding and repair operations. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with no weekend work expected. The role is highly hands-on and physically active, requiring frequent standing, crouching, walking, climbing shipyard dry dock stairs and ladders, and working in high heat spaces and confined areas such as under false decking for cable runs. You will regularly lift, carry, push, and pull tools, cables, and equipment up to 40 pounds for most of the shift, and occasionally up to 50 pounds. The work involves extensive use of electrical tools and test equipment, including meters, test instruments, and tools for cable installation, layout, and cutting of electrical enclosures. Safety is a central focus, with active participation in safety walk-throughs and adherence to OSHA, NAVSEA, and internal safety and quality procedures. Work attire typically consists of practical, safety-oriented clothing suitable for a shipyard, including required personal protective equipment as specified by site and project guidelines. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chesapeake, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $40.00/hr.
