Job Description Job Title: Industrial Mechanic Job Description The Industrial Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing production equipment in a FDA controlled environment. This includes working with fermentation vessels, utilities such as steam, air, and water, rotating equipment, and downstream separation and packaging assets. The role requires supporting safe, efficient, and compliant operations under GMP and food-safety standards to minimize downtime and ensure product quality. Responsibilities • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on fermentation and downstream equipment such as fermenters, bioreactors, transfer pumps, valves, homogenizers, decanters, centrifuges, heat exchangers, air compressors, vacuum systems, and packaging lines., • Service utilities relevant to yeast production, including steam/boilers, condensate, clean/plant water, CIP supply/return, process air, CO₂ venting/abatement, and chilled/glycol loops., • Inspect, align, and rebuild rotating equipment, including bearings, seals, couplings, and gearboxes, and perform precision shaft alignment and balancing., • Support CIP (Clean-in-Place) and SIP (Steam-in-Place) readiness by verifying spray ball coverage, valve actuation, temperature/time/flow targets, gasket integrity, and leak tightness., • Diagnose mechanical failures using root cause techniques, replace worn parts, and correct piping/mechanical fit-ups according to sanitary standards., • Read and interpret P&IDs, OEM manuals, schematics, exploded views, and equipment specifications., • Collaborate with Controls/EE teams on issues involving PLCs, VFDs, sensors, and instrumentation., • 3+ years of experience as an industrial/mechanical maintenance technician in food/beverage, fermentation, chemicals, or process manufacturing., • Proficiency with pumps, valves, pneumatics, hydraulics, conveyors, gearboxes, steam systems, and heat exchangers., • Experience with sanitary/aseptic piping, tri-clamp fittings, gaskets, and basic sanitary welding or fitting., • Hands-on skills in precision measuring, rigging and hoisting, alignment tools, and torque procedures., • Ability to read P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and maintenance procedures; comfortable using a CMMS., • Food experience (FDA) is a big plus., • Welding and fabrication skills are a plus., • Experience with boilers and cooling towers is a plus., • Basic electrical troubleshooting skills., • Boiler Operator experience or license is beneficial., • Ammonia refrigeration exposure or knowledge of chilled-water systems is helpful., • Experience with wastewater/pretreatment systems. We value our employees and show appreciation regularly. Work Environment This position is for the 2nd shift, working from 6 PM to 6 AM, with 5-10 hours of overtime available weekly. The work environment is mostly temperature-controlled and comfortable, though it can be ambient and loud. The production facility is FDA regulated, and the environment includes wet floors, caustic/acid cleaners, steam, and odors. Required PPE includes safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, slip-resistant boots, and as needed, a chemical apron and face shield. Shifts, weekends, and on-call duties may be required.
