Job Description Job Title: Fleet Vehicle Mechanic Job Description This role is responsible for maintaining and repairing a fleet of more than 100 vehicles and pieces of equipment that support airport operations at the Charleston International Airport. The mechanic performs routine and preventive maintenance, troubleshoots mechanical and electrical issues, coordinates with outside vendors for complex repairs, and ensures accurate maintenance records. The position contributes directly to safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all assigned vehicles and equipment. Shift: 7am-4pm, Monday-Friday Starting Pay: $23.41 an hour (yearly increases of 3% - 5% guaranteed) Responsibilities • Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including oil changes, lubrication, inspection of hoses, belts, fluids, and wiring, and general cleaning of vehicles., • Conduct periodic vehicle inspections, including testing and measurement, to identify wear, damage, or potential failures., • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues on vehicles and equipment, identify solutions, and estimate repair costs., • Overhaul engines, transmissions, clutches, and other major components as needed, and repair or replace worn or broken parts., • Align wheels, adjust brakes, and tune engines to ensure safe and efficient operation., • Change oil and service pumps and valves, and perform upkeep and routine maintenance on generators., • Complete basic vehicle maintenance tasks such as fluid checks, tire rotations, air filter replacements, battery checks and testing, inspection of lights, and basic brake inspections., • Oversee outside vendors performing complex or overflow repairs, including scheduling work, estimating and contracting for time and materials, and ensuring quality and timeliness of service., • Research and source parts, compare pricing, and order parts as necessary to complete repairs and maintenance efficiently and cost-effectively., • Ensure all department equipment and materials are maintained, safe, and prepared for operation in accordance with OSHA and internal safety standards., • Maintain and wear appropriate safety gear and follow established safe working policies and procedures at all times., • Stay current on newly purchased equipment and vehicles to understand their maintenance and repair requirements., • Perform annual pump testing and ladder testing and ensure that all related records are complete and accurate., • Maintain detailed vehicle and equipment repair records, including documenting service, testing, and maintenance activities in the records management system., • Process and prioritize maintenance requests and invoices, entering all required information into the records management system., • Operate and maintain various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and motorized equipment required to perform maintenance and repair tasks., • Use a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, and modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, internet, email, and other software as needed., • Operate general office equipment such as computers, printers, and scanners to complete documentation and recordkeeping., • Review electrical diagrams and document engine wear and tear and other diagnostic findings to support accurate maintenance planning., • At least 2 years of experience in vehicle maintenance, including oil changes, fluid checks, tire rotations, air filter replacements, battery checks, light inspections, and basic brake inspections., • Ability to perform preventive maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles, engines, transmissions, clutches, pumps, valves, and related components., • Strong diagnostic skills to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues on vehicles and equipment and determine appropriate repair methods., • Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and technical documentation related to vehicle and equipment systems., • Proficiency in maintaining accurate repair and maintenance records in a records management or similar system., • Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and analyze data, and apply established standards to identify relationships and effects., • Skill in coordinating with and influencing others, including outside vendors and internal personnel, to schedule and complete maintenance and repair activities., • Ability to operate, maneuver, and control various equipment, machinery, tools, and materials, including power tools, hand tools, and office equipment., • Competence using a personal computer with word processing, spreadsheet, internet, email, and related software., • Ability to understand and use a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory information and technical data., • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, counting, recording counts, and basic measuring., • Ability to apply principles of motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment in solving problems and developing repair approaches., • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and extreme weather conditions, with significant safety considerations due to full-body physical labor and handling of medium-to-heavy materials. The schedule typically runs Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with overtime as needed to support operational demands. The role involves frequent use of power tools, hand tools, motorized equipment, and shop equipment, as well as regular use of computers, printers, scanners, and other office devices for documentation and recordkeeping. The environment is fast-paced and safety-focused, requiring consistent adherence to safety procedures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
