Job Description Job Title: Millwright Helper / Mechanical Ship Repair Technician Job Description This hands-on role supports ship repair projects by performing mechanical maintenance, disassembly, cleaning, inspection preparation, and reassembly of shipboard mechanical systems on active vessels. You will work with a variety of mechanical components, using hand and power tools daily in an industrial shipyard environment while adhering to strict safety and inspection standards. Responsibilities • Perform mechanical maintenance and repair work aboard ships on active vessels., • Disassemble, clean, inspect, and reassemble low-temperature fresh water coolers, including removing plates and gaskets, cleaning components, and reinstalling and sealing systems to meet inspection standards., • Replace nozzles on high-pressure air flasks in accordance with established procedures and safety requirements., • Perform blue lining and boiler-related work, including opening boilers, cleaning internal components, and preparing equipment for inspection., • Use hand tools and power tools daily, including extensive wrench work, to complete mechanical repair tasks., • Follow all shipyard safety requirements, procedures, and inspection standards while working in industrial and shipboard environments., • Work alongside supervisors, inspectors, and shipyard personnel to ensure quality workmanship and timely completion of assigned tasks., • Maintain a clean and organized work area and handle tools and equipment safely and responsibly., • Adapt to working in confined, shipboard, and industrial spaces as required by the project. Essential Skills • Mechanical aptitude and hands-on mechanical experience in ship repair, industrial maintenance, or heavy equipment (preferred)., • Ability to work aboard ships and in industrial environments, including confined and elevated areas as required., • Proficiency using hand tools and power tools, with a strong comfort level performing physical, wrench-turning work., • Ability to perform disassembly, cleaning, inspection preparation, and reassembly of mechanical systems., • Capability to follow detailed instructions, safety requirements, and inspection standards in a shipyard setting., • Previous experience working in ship repair preferred, but not required. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience working with low-temperature fresh water coolers or similar heat exchanger systems., • Familiarity with boilers, blue lining, and boiler opening and cleaning procedures., • Experience replacing nozzles or components on high-pressure systems such as air flasks., • Experience in industrial maintenance, marine mechanical work, or heavy equipment repair., • Ability to collaborate effectively with supervisors, inspectors, and other shipyard personnel., • Willingness to learn shipyard-specific procedures and inspection practices. Work Environment This role is based in a shipyard environment working aboard active vessels and within industrial facilities. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from early morning until mid-afternoon (approximately 2:15 PM), with no overtime currently scheduled. You will work in and around shipboard spaces, mechanical rooms, and industrial areas that may be noisy, confined, or exposed to the elements. Daily work involves extensive use of hand tools and power tools, frequent bending, lifting, and physical activity, and adherence to shipyard safety rules and inspection standards. Appropriate industrial work attire and personal protective equipment are required at all times in the yard and on vessels. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Charleston, SC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $24.00/hr.
