We are seeking an experienced Manager of Payroll & Benefits to lead and optimize our payroll and benefits programs for a multi-state workforce. This is a high-impact role responsible for compliance, accuracy, employee experience, and the strategic alignment of our total rewards programs. This position is remote, with a strong preference for candidates located in or near the Raleigh, North Carolina area to support collaboration and occasional in-person needs. This leader will be both strategic and hands-on, owning day-to-day oversight while driving continuous improvement, scalability, and strong internal controls. What You’ll DoBenefits Strategy & Administration * Lead the strategy, administration, and continuous improvement of all employee benefit programs including medical, dental, vision, HSA/FSA, life, disability, retirement, and ancillary benefits * Manage annual Open Enrollment from planning through execution, including vendor coordination, communications, system configuration, and employee education * Serve as the primary point of contact for brokers, carriers, and third-party administrators * Analyze utilization, costs, trends, and employee feedback to inform renewals and long-term strategy * Ensure programs are competitive, compliant, and aligned with MyCC culture and budget Payroll Oversight & Governance * Provide oversight of end-to-end, multi-state payroll operations ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance * Supervise the Payroll & Tax Administrator responsible for day-to-day payroll processing * Review and audit payroll runs, adjustments, tax filings, and reconciliations * Serve as escalation point for complex payroll issues including corrections, garnishments, tax matters, and audits * Partner with Finance to ensure strong payroll controls and alignment with budgets Compliance & Risk Management * Support compliance with federal, state, and local regulations including ERISA, ACA, COBRA, wage and hour, and state tax laws * Oversee retirement plan administration and work closely with plan providers and advisors * Support audits such as 401(k) audits, nondiscrimination testing, and plan reporting * Maintain strong documentation, procedures, and internal controls Leadership & Collaboration * Lead, coach, and develop the Payroll & Tax Administrator * Establish processes and documentation to support growth and audit readiness * Serve as a subject-matter expert and trusted partner Executive, Board & Employee Communication * Prepare executive- and Board-level reporting on benefits costs, trends, compliance, and payroll metrics * Translate complex data into clear, actionable insights * Deliver employee-facing presentations including Open Enrollment and company-wide benefits meetings * Support broader total rewards and employee experience initiatives Systems & Optimization * Act as system expert for payroll and benefits platforms (ADP or similar HRIS/payroll systems) * Identify opportunities for automation, efficiency, and improved employee self-service * Support system upgrades, implementations, and integrations What You BringCore Competencies * Deep expertise in payroll and employee benefits * Executive presence and strong presentation skills * Strong audit and compliance mindset with exceptional attention to detail * Ability to think strategically while executing operationally * Clear, confident communicator across all levels of the organization * Strong project management and organizational skills Required Qualifications * Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business, Finance, or related field — or equivalent experience * 7+ years of progressive experience in payroll and benefits administration * Proven experience managing multi-state payroll and complex benefits programs * Experience presenting to executive and/or Board-level audiences * Strong knowledge of payroll and benefits compliance requirements * Experience leading and developing direct reports Preferred Qualifications * Experience in education, healthcare, or other regulated industries * Certifications such as CPP, CEBS, SHRM-CP/SCP, or PHR/SPHR * Advanced experience with ADP or similar HRIS/payroll systems * Strong analytical skills with the ability to turn data into strategic recommendations Work Environment & Physical Requirements This role operates in a professional office environment.
