ROLE SUMMARY We are seeking a field-driven Safety Coordinator to support active public works and electrical infrastructure projects across California. This role is responsible for implementing and enforcing site-specific safety programs, ensuring compliance with Cal/OSHA and Caltrans requirements, and partnering closely with field teams to maintain a safe, high-performing job site environment. This is a hands-on, field-based role requiring daily presence on active construction sites. THE MENDOZA WAY OBJECTIVE At HLE, Inc., we don't hire safety coordinators we hire safety leaders. You will work across active public works and electrical infrastructure projects throughout California, partnering with field crews, project managers, subcontractors, and agency representatives. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES REQUIREMENTS Required Qualifications • Minimum 3 years of safety experience in construction, heavy civil, industrial, or energy sectors, • Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA regulations, Caltrans specifications, and Title 8 CCR, • Experience with SSSPs, incident investigations, and safety compliance documentation, • Ability to review subcontractor safety plans and JHAs, • Fluent in English and Spanish (spoken and written), • Valid drivers license and ability to travel to job sites, • Cal/OSHA 30-Hour or OSHA 510 - required contractual submittal per Caltrans specifications, • First Aid & CPR certification, • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or CHST (BCSP) - required contractual submittal per Caltrans specifications Preferred Qualifications • Additional safety certifications (NASP or equivalent), • Confined Space Entry and Fall Protection training, • Public works project experience ACCOUNTABILITIES THIS SEAT OWNS Other Functions: This job description does not contain a complete list of all activities, duties, or responsibilities required of the employee. HARD SKILLS Fluent English / Spanish spoken, read, written Fluent English and Spanish required to effectively communicate with field crews. Platform Proficiency Microsoft Office, Procore, Vista, and all required safety and compliance platforms. SSSP Ownership Develop, update, and enforce site-specific safety programs to project and Caltrans specification. JHA & Risk Assessment Review and approve JHAs; evaluate field risk against applicable contract specifications. Incident Investigation Lead investigations; develop corrective action plans and track through to verified closure. Cal/OSHA / Caltrans / 8 CCR Knowledge Working knowledge of applicable California safety regulations and Department specifications. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This role operates in active construction environments substations, power facilities, Caltrans corridors, highway projects, and infrastructure job sites across California. Daily field presence is expected and required. Ability to walk, stand, and conduct inspections across uneven and active construction sites for extended periods. Regular exposure to outdoor elements heat, cold, wind, rain, dust, and nighttime conditions. Ability to properly use and maintain all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times on site. Adequate hearing and visual capacity to identify hazards and respond to site alerts and warnings. Reliable transportation required; mileage and travel expenses reimbursed per company policy.
