JOB DESCRIPTION: 11/10/2025 Job Title: Director of Accounting FLSA Status: Exempt Reports To: Vice President, Finance & Accounting Location: Hybrid | Cohere Corporate Office – Phoenix, AZ Summary The Cohere accounting team provides accounting and financial reporting support for a growing portfolio of master-planned communities and the people who live there. The Director of Accounting is an organizational leader who plays a critical role in the accounting team's success by providing overarching supervision that ensures accuracy, efficiency, timeliness, and service excellence to both internal and external stakeholders. Reporting to the Vice President, Finance & Accounting the Director of Accounting is responsible for directing a professional team of accountants, associates, and customer care specialists. This individual is empathetic, professional, and accommodating in all interactions with property owners, vendors, partners, and stakeholders and demonstrates exceptional skill in all aspects of accounting. The Director of Accounting is foundational to the long-term growth and financial success of the company. Scope • Lead a high performing Accounting Team in all aspects of our community association accounting functions., • Ensure process adherence, deadlines and associated assessments and fees for all associations and special service areas are accurate in ERP., • Financial strategy and planning for process development and workflow improvements., • Financial forecasting analysis and strategic planning support., • Monthly reporting requirements including KPIs for the executive leadership team., • Oversee day-to-day operations of an accounting team comprised of approximately twenty accounting professionals., • Review monthly financial statements produced by Sr. Accounting team for accuracy. Providing technical expertise as well as assisting in variance analysis/executive summaries, • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, revenue management and collections processes, • Manage Transaction Privilege Tax Process, • Oversee Annual 1099 & 1096 production, • Oversee Developer Subsidy Requests and forecast cash flow., • Manage the payment of the association’s property taxes, • Manage the Chart of Accounts, • Cultivate professional working relationships with Association’s Bank(s) representatives, • Lead annual budget processes across all departments., • Facilitate, oversee and review Association Budgets while collaborating with Executive Directors, the Board and Staff., • Oversee annual audit and review processes while collaborating with Sr. Accountants and Community Life team members., • Ensure adherence to deadlines as defined by community governing documents., • Collaborate with internal teams on the development, implementation and maintenance of internal accounting controls, policies and procedures., • Manage quasi-governmental accounting practices for special districts., • Attend after-hours events and meetings as necessary Attributes Key attributes for a successful Director of Accounting include, but are not limited to the following capabilities, qualifications, and performance skills: • Analytical: skilled at research and problem-solving, • Efficient: highly organized and capable of producing a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment, • Self-motivated: ability to think, work and make independent decisions based on sound judgment, • Professional: exhibits appropriate decorum with internal and external stakeholders, • Trustworthy: demonstrates a high level of integrity, honesty, and respect, • Technologically astute: comfortable with complex software platforms and databases; willing to learn new tools., • Good communicator: excellent written and verbal skills., • Customer-focused: responsive to client needs with a high commitment to closure., • Growth-oriented: committed to professional growth, ongoing process improvement and team development., • Flexible: able to thrive in a dynamic, deadline driven environment while serving the needs of multiple entities Knowledge & Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required., • Master’s degree preferred., • Current CPA certification preferred., • Minimum of 5 years leading accounting teams, including direct oversight of large, multi-functional teams across various locations. required, • Demonstrated success managing teams of 10+ professionals, including senior accountants, analysts, and support staff. required, • 10+ years of progressive experience in general accounting, bookkeeping, and/or related accounting experience required., • Experience in financial statement production, including balance sheet, income statement, general ledger, and bank reconciliations highly desirable., • Experience in budgeting and forecasting., • Experience in audit processes., • Strong knowledge of GAAP and other relevant accounting standards., • Experience with 1099 & 1096 production; 1120-H tax returns; and the audit process preferred., • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required, with special emphasis on Excel., • Proficiency in accounting software., • Experience in managing teams, deadlines, and complex financial data., • Proven experience in developing leadership pipelines, mentoring team leads, and implementing performance management systems for large accounting departments., • Proven experience in training, coaching, and enhancing the capabilities of accounting teams., • Knowledge of the real estate industry and specific title transfer and disclosure experience preferred., • Knowledge of community association accounting, operations, community amenities, and community governance is highly desirable., • Knowledge of SOX compliance., • Familiarity with ERP systems (integrated software platforms)., • Proficiency in database management and Vantaca Software knowledge preferred.
