Job DescriptionJob Title: Phlebotomist Job Description This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality specimen collection while supporting smooth laboratory workflow in a fast-paced patient service center. You will collect, process, and prepare specimens according to established procedures, ensure accurate documentation, and provide courteous, professional service to patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric. The position also involves troubleshooting, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements to support efficient and safe operations. Responsibilities • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in accordance with established procedures., • Clearly and courteously explain the blood draw and other specimen collection processes (such as urine or fecal collection) to patients to ensure understanding and comfort., • Collect and store specimens according to established protocols, including correct use of collection containers and tubes., • Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure accurate patient and test identification., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols., • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing., • Package specimens for transport in accordance with protocol to maintain specimen integrity during transit., • Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and follow specific procedures for handling and transport as outlined by protocol., • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a clean and safe work area., • Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or records., • Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read or relay laboratory results to satisfy inquiries within scope of role and policy., • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance policies., • Attend annual departmental trainings and maintain required competencies., • Assist with troubleshooting routine issues in specimen collection and processing and escalate concerns as needed., • Support training of new or less experienced staff by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques., • Make recommendations to improve workflow and efficiency within the patient service center and laboratory processes., • Provide high-quality customer service to patients and clinical staff in a fast-paced environment, including working with pediatric through geriatric populations.Essential Skills, • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including performing blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles., • Experience performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, and preparing samples for testing., • Ability to collect and handle various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens, following established protocols., • Strong attention to detail in matching laboratory requisitions or computer labels to specimen tubes and verifying orders for accuracy., • Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders., • Knowledge of proper specimen storage requirements, including temperature control and appropriate containers., • Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety standards., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite., • Customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally with patients from pediatric to geriatric age groups., • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting., • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a phlebotomist or in a similar clinical laboratory role., • High School Diploma or GED., • Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience working in a patient service center or similar outpatient lab environment., • Comfort working with diverse patient populations, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients., • Familiarity with medical terminology and CPT-related information in a laboratory context., • Strong communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and to handle telephone inquiries., • Ability to contribute to training efforts by demonstrating proper techniques to colleagues., • Capability to adapt to changing priorities and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.Work Environment This position is based in a three-person patient service center that serves pediatric through geriatric patients in a fast-paced clinical laboratory setting. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with alternating Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and weekend work is performed at a nearby patient service center location. The role involves frequent interaction with patients and clinical staff, regular use of phlebotomy and laboratory equipment such as needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen transport materials, and routine computer use including Microsoft Office Suite. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and adherence to regulatory standards, with annual departmental training and ongoing compliance requirements. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Herndon, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
