Job Overview The Chief Engineer will elevate the focus within the Engineering and Security departments by implementing effective strategies, systems, and safety programs that ensure exceptional department performance, regulatory compliance, asset protection, and guest satisfaction. The Chief Engineer works closely with the General Manager and the hotel leadership team to ensure that consistent policies and procedures are followed while supporting both short- and long-term organizational goals. The Chief Engineer serves as the property's leader for engineering operations, preventative maintenance, life safety systems, emergency preparedness, risk management, and facility compliance and overall security of the hotel. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and well-maintained environment for guests, associates, vendors, and contractors. What you'll do: • Adhere to all New Waterloo operational standards, policies, procedures, manuals, training materials, memos, and verbal instructions., • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all hotel departments, including Engineering, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, and Security/Loss Prevention functions., • Ensure the hotel's maintenance, appearance, and overall condition meet New Waterloo standards., • Perform and supervise repairs, maintenance, alterations, and installations in compliance with safety regulations and applicable local, state, federal, and insurance requirements., • Diagnose equipment malfunctions, determine corrective actions, and document repairs following departmental procedures., • Organize, schedule, and track preventive and corrective maintenance using designated preventative maintenance software; maintain logs, checklists, and reports., • Delegate and supervise daily maintenance tasks and special projects to ensure quality work with minimal supervision or rework., • Operate tools and equipment safely and ensure all engineering associates do the same., • Monitor inventory levels and order supplies within the approved budget., • Identify and resolve mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, appliance, and structural issues; ensure timely repair and resolution., • Oversee maintenance of all structural fixtures and mechanical systems, both interior and exterior., • Oversee and maintain the exterior appearance of the building, up to and including landscaping aesthetics, • Participate in recruitment, training, coaching, and performance evaluations for engineering staff., • Train engineering associates and other team members on hotel systems, equipment operation, safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and regulatory compliance requirements., • Serve as a technical liaison to other departments and ensure timely communication and follow-up on service requests., • Respond to emergencies in an engineering capacity to protect guests, associates, and property; maintain working knowledge of life safety systems, fire protection systems, emergency power systems, and sprinkler systems., • Maintain accurate utility readings and assist in monitoring energy usage, sustainability initiatives, and conservation efforts., • Assist with the preparation and management of engineering budgets, expense tracking, and capital improvement projects., • Ensure guest complaints are resolved promptly, professionally, and courteously., • Conduct weekly property inspections (minimum five guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house areas) with the General Manager and promptly address identified deficiencies., • Maintain positive public relations with guests, associates, vendors, contractors, and partners at all times., • Attend relevant meetings, including monthly financial reviews, and remain flexible and responsive to scheduling needs. Safety, Risk Management & Loss Prevention/Security Responsibilities • Lead the property's safety and risk management initiatives to minimize accidents, injuries, property damage, liability exposure, and operational disruptions., • Maintain an increased awareness of safety, security, and risk management concerns throughout the property and ensure compliance with OSHA standards and company safety policies., • Conduct routine inspections of engineering spaces, mechanical rooms, rooftops, public spaces, guest areas, and back-of-house areas to identify and mitigate hazards., • Ensure all engineering equipment, tools, machinery, and safety systems are maintained in safe working condition and comply with applicable regulations., • Assist in the investigation, documentation, and follow-up of accidents, incidents, guest injuries, property damage, and safety-related concerns., • Maintain accurate inspection records, safety logs, permits, compliance documentation, and incident reports., • Partner with department leaders to implement corrective actions resulting from incidents, inspections, audits, or regulatory findings., • Support emergency preparedness efforts by maintaining and testing emergency response systems and ensuring the readiness of all critical building infrastructure., • Serve as a member of the hotel's Emergency Response Team and provide leadership during emergencies, evacuations, severe weather events, utility failures, and other critical incidents., • Coordinate with management, vendors, contractors, emergency responders, and government agencies regarding safety, security, and facility-related matters., • Monitor contractor and vendor compliance with property safety standards, security procedures, permits, and insurance requirements., • Promote a culture of safety through ongoing training, coaching, communication, and accountability for all associates. QUALIFICATIONS • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Management, or a related field preferred., • Five (5) or more years of progressive engineering leadership experience in hospitality, commercial facilities, or related industries preferred., • Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams, capital projects, preventative maintenance programs, and facility operations., • Strong knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, life safety, and energy management systems., • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, workplace safety standards, and emergency preparedness programs., • Experience conducting inspections, audits, risk assessments, and regulatory compliance activities preferred., • CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications preferred., • Possess a Security License COMPETENCIES • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand the primary language(s) of the workplace., • Ability to read and interpret safety regulations, operating manuals, technical specifications, and maintenance procedures., • Ability to write reports, incident documentation, and professional correspondence., • Strong leadership, coaching, and team-development skills., • Excellent communication and conflict-resolution abilities., • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management skills., • Demonstrates sound judgment and decision-making during routine operations and emergencies., • Strong understanding of safety, risk management, and loss prevention principles., • Uses time effectively and excels at prioritizing multiple responsibilities., • Maintains professionalism, integrity, and accountability while leading by example.
