The Role The Maintenance Electrician is responsible for the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of electrical maintenance, installation, testing and fault-finding across our operational sites. Installations and repairs to electrical systems, equipment, and machinery. They will ensure compliance with safety regulations, diagnose and repair faults, and conduct preventive maintenance (PPM). They will also be required to carry out Portable Appliance Testing (PAT). The postholder will ensure full compliance with electrical safety standards and regulatory requirements The role plays a key part in maintaining asset reliability and supporting ongoing and future maintenance programmes. Role responsibilities • Interpret and apply electrical drawings, including wiring diagrams and schematics, ensuring accurate installation and modification of systems., • Undertake electrical installation, maintenance, overhaul, and modification work on depot infrastructure., • Perform planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance activities to maximise asset reliability, availability, and performance., • Carry out testing, inspection, and verification of electrical systems to ensure compliance and safe operation., • Safely work on high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) systems, including isolation, testing, and reinstatement in line with approved procedures., • Support commissioning and decommissioning activities of equipment., • Ensure all work complies with current electrical regulations (including 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (EAWR), BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)), Maintenance Procedures and Standards (including Emergency Lighting & Fire Detection Testing, Portable Appliance Testing (PAT), RCD testing) and internal Company procedures., • Adhere to safe systems of work, including permit-to-work, isolation processes, and risk assessments, promoting a strong safety culture., • Support mechanical and multi-disciplinary activities where required to contribute to overall maintenance activities., • Identify recurring faults and contribute to root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reliability and performance., • Accurately complete maintenance records, test documentation, and inspection reports using company systems., • Ensure the correct use, care, and calibration of electrical tools and equipment., • Conduct routine inspections and service of electrical equipment to ensure optimal performance., • Diagnose malfunctions in electrical or electromechanical equipment and carrying out the required repair., • Install new electrical components, lighting, control systems and machinery. QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING • Apprenticeship in Electrical Maintenance or in Maintenance with a specific electrical pathway – essential., • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) qualification (City & Guilds 2382 or equivalent) – essential., • PAT – essential. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: • Proven experience in electrical installation, maintenance, fault finding, and repair within a heavy engineering, rail, industrial, or manufacturing environment., • Proven diagnostic and troubleshooting capability, with the ability to identify root causes of faults using appropriate testing equipment (e.g. multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers)., • Ability to carry out inspection, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems, including Periodic Inspection and Testing, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations., • Sound understanding of electrical principles, including AC/DC circuits, voltage, current, resistance, power, and magnetism., • In-depth knowledge of current electrical regulations and safety standards (e.g. BS 7671 18th Edition), including safe isolation procedures, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and appropriate use of PPE., • Familiarity with electrical system components, including motors, transformers, inverters, relays, contactors, switchgear, and lighting systems., • Working knowledge of control systems, including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), automation, and associated pneumatic/hydraulic systems., • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, technical drawings, and manuals., • Experience in planned preventative and predictive maintenance activities, including inspections, testing, and condition monitoring., • High level of technical proficiency, including cable termination, panel wiring, and installation work to a high standard., • Competent in the use of IT systems for recording maintenance activities, producing reports, and managing documentation and certification., • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while also contributing effectively as part of a team., • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to non-specialist audiences. Welsh Language Skills The ability to speak/write Welsh would make a great addition to your application, but it is not essential for this role.
