Job Description JOB SUMMARYThe Cast Specialist serves as a trained member of the orthopedic care team, assisting healthcare professionals in delivering patient care and performing all casting-related duties. This role involves preparing, applying, adjusting, and removing casts, splints, and braces under a physician’s direction while ensuring patient comfort, safety, and understanding of orthopedic appliance use. The specialist contributes to maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient environment while supporting the overall quality of patient care in the orthopedic department. Key Responsibilities • Prepare, apply, adjust, and remove casts and splints under a physician’s direction., • Assist with wound care, fracture reductions, and other orthopedic procedures as advised by the physician., • Prepare and apply orthopedic appliances, including pre-operative braces, crutches, and other durable medical equipment (DME)., • Conduct specialized measurements for custom brace fittings., • Educate patients on cast care and proper use of orthopedic appliances such as braces and crutches., • Prepare traction setups and assemble fracture beds with pulleys, ropes, and frames as requested., • Inspect traction equipment for deficiencies and make necessary adjustments., • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the cast and soft goods room., • Order and maintain inventory of supplies and DME appropriate to patient volume., • Coordinate the collection of patient data required for specialty equipment billing., • Support continuous quality improvement activities within the clinic or department., • Maintain a clean and safe environment, demonstrating cost-effective and productive work practices., • Promote positive patient and peer relationships and uphold patient rights., • Function as a collaborative and supportive team member., • Perform other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications • High school diploma., • One year of experience in a hospital, clinic, or medical practice setting., • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification., • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology., • Expertise in casting materials, splints, and braces, with familiarity in clinic operations., • Prior orthopedic or rehabilitation clinic experience., • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
