Job Description Under the general supervision of the Health and Life Sciences (HLS) Department Chair and Program Director, the Laboratory Coordinator manages operations of multiple laboratories within the College of Science and Health and provides supervision and training of laboratory technicians, interns, and teaching assistants. She/he coordinates the physical preparation of laboratories, orders supplies, supervises preparation of or prepares solutions, maintains inventory, and handles equipment and other materials for student laboratory classes. She/he performs prescribed techniques, operates and maintains laboratory equipment, organizes laboratory benches for teamwork, provides materials for students, performs scheduled routine maintenance on laboratory devices such as microscopes, pipettes, and centrifuges, and submits laboratory reports to the assigned supervisor. She/he also makes recommendations to Chairs/Program Directors for coordination of laboratory management, equipment use, and planning for College-wide needs. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Prepares and oversees preparation of laboratory material and protocols for courses including but not limited to the following:, • Biomedical Sciences (BMS) courses: General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Microbiology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, and General Biology., • Master in Biomedical Sciences courses: MBS 530 Translational Research Methods 1 and MBS 531 Translational Research Methods II, • Physician Assistant (PA) Program courses: MPA 503 Diagnostic Skills & Procedures 1, MPA 510 Physical Diagnosis, and MPA 511 Microbiology and Infectious Disease (summer course)., • Identify the staffing requirement for a replacement or new lab technician including writing an accurate and effective job description to attract the best candidate, acting as the primary interviewer during the interview process and owning the final hiring decision, pending executive approval, and effectively managing the hiring team throughout the recruiting process., • Plan, direct and oversee the training, coordination, and supervision of the laboratory technicians, interns, and laboratory teaching assistants., • Assists in laboratory teaching and supervising students., • Monitors laboratory safety, biohazard, and OSHA compliance., • Maintain an up to date inventory of supplies and equipment required by the various courses. Purchase materials, equipment, and instruments when necessary., • Manages laboratory schedules and ensures laboratories are prepared in a timely manner., • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment and performs routine maintenance on laboratory devices., • Maintains accurate, organized files, records, logs and laboratory protocols., • Ensures that the laboratory is kept clean and sanitary., • Communicates with instructors on a weekly basis to discuss laboratory preparation needs., • Makes recommendations to Chairs/Program Directors for lab coordination and planning., • Responsible for monitoring lab safety and OSHA compliance of COSH labs. Other Duties and Responsibilities: • Perform other related duties as assigned. EDUCATION: • Regionally accredited bachelor’s degree in a related science required. Master’s degree (preferred) EXPERIENCE: • 2-3 years laboratory experience in a related field, • Fume Hood Certified, • Biohazard and chemical pickup and disposal certified KNOWLEDGE/ABILITY/SKILLS: • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and processes, • Routine laboratory equipment and/or instruments maintenance and repair, • Knowledge of record keeping and filing systems., • Skill and ability to conduct standardized lab procedures and tests., • Follow oral and written direction., • Excellent interpersonal skills, • The ability to perform highly detailed work with sustained attention and care while providing/obtaining information on numerous inquiries is paramount to success in this position.
