Job DescriptionJob Title: Histology Coordinator (Supervisor) Job Description This role leads the day-to-day supervision and training of histotechnicians in a first-shift hospital laboratory environment. The Histology Coordinator (Supervisor) ensures high-quality histology services by overseeing testing activities, maintaining sample compliance, and driving continuous quality assurance. This position combines hands-on technical expertise with strong leadership to support a large hospital laboratory and uphold regulatory and organizational standards. Responsibilities • Supervise daily operations of the histology laboratory on first shift, ensuring all work flows efficiently and accurately., • Provide ongoing training, coaching, and technical guidance to histotechnicians to maintain high standards of performance and competency., • Oversee histology testing processes to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance with established protocols and regulatory requirements., • Monitor sample handling and processing to ensure full sample compliance, including proper labeling, documentation, and chain of custody., • Lead and participate in quality assurance testing activities to ensure consistent quality of histology results., • Implement and maintain quality control procedures for histology instruments, reagents, and workflows., • Review, update, and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to histology testing and laboratory practices., • Collaborate with pathologists, laboratory leadership, and other departments to support diagnostic needs and resolve issues related to histology services., • Identify process improvements and implement best practices to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and turnaround times in the histology lab., • Ensure all staff adhere to laboratory safety guidelines and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment., • Support the completion of Path and Lab ICCE Career Ladder requirements for Histology Technologist (HTL) IV/Specialist within the required timeframe., • Assist with staff scheduling, workload distribution, and coverage planning to meet operational needs of a large hospital laboratory.Essential Skills, • Extensive experience in histology testing and laboratory operations, with 10+ years of experience in a large hospital environment., • Proven supervisory skills with experience leading, training, and mentoring histotechnicians or histology staff., • Strong knowledge of histology techniques, sample processing, and testing workflows in a clinical laboratory setting., • Demonstrated ability to ensure sample compliance, including proper handling, labeling, documentation, and tracking., • Experience in quality assurance testing and quality control processes within a histology or clinical laboratory., • Bachelor’s degree in a science discipline from an accredited college or university., • HTL(ASCP) certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) or equivalent., • ASCP certification as required for histology technologists., • Ability to complete Path and Lab ICCE Career Ladder requirements for Histology Technologist (HTL) IV/Specialist within 6 months of starting in the position., • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and commitment to accuracy in all aspects of laboratory work., • Effective communication skills to interact with histology staff, pathologists, and other healthcare professionals.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Prior experience supervising or coordinating a histology laboratory in a large hospital or similar high-volume clinical setting., • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver training programs for histotechnicians and laboratory staff., • Familiarity with laboratory accreditation standards and regulatory requirements related to histology and clinical pathology., • Experience implementing process improvements and best practices in a laboratory environment., • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical and operational issues in histology workflows., • Commitment to professional development and advancement through structured career ladder programs.Work Environment The role is based in a hospital histology laboratory operating on a first-shift schedule. The work environment involves a high-volume, fast-paced setting typical of a large hospital, with close collaboration among histotechnicians, technologists, pathologists, and other laboratory professionals. The position requires frequent use of histology instruments, laboratory equipment, and standard clinical laboratory systems while working with biological specimens and reagents. The laboratory emphasizes adherence to safety protocols, quality standards, and precise documentation. Professional laboratory attire and appropriate personal protective equipment are required to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
