Job DescriptionSalary: $21.00/hr Custodian Department:Operations Reports To:Director of Operations (or designee) FLSA Status:Non-Exempt Work Schedule Expectations:Full-time; may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional extended or inclement weather hours based on operational needs Position Summary The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, organized, and sanitary environment throughout SPCA of Wake County facilities. This role supports operational efficiency, staff safety, volunteer experience, animal health, and public trust by ensuring all assigned areas are cleaned and maintained according to established standards and biosecurity protocols. This position works in a fast-paced shelter environment and requires comfort working around animals, strong odors, cleaning chemicals, and bio-waste. Primary Responsibilities Cleaning & Sanitation • Clean and sanitize assigned areas, including:, • Public-facing areas and high-traffic spaces, • Offices, restrooms, breakrooms, Learning Center, and common areas, • Non-animal operational and support areas, • Safely clean and disinfect surfaces using approved chemicals and biosecurity procedures, • Remove trash, recycling, and waste following safety and sanitation protocols, • Operate and maintain cleaning tools and equipment (mops, vacuums, floor machines, pressure washers, etc.), • Properly clean, store, and maintain custodial equipment, • Monitor supply levels and notify supervisor when restocking is needed, • Follow all safety procedures, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE), • Adhere to chemical handling, labeling, and storage requirements, • Place appropriate signage when cleaning wet or hazardous areas, • Work cooperatively with medical, animal care, and facilities/operations teams, • Communicate concerns related to cleanliness, safety, or facility issues, • Be flexible in responding to changing priorities and SPCA needs, • Support SPCA needs during special events, Learning Center programs, promotions, or emergency situations as needed Qualifications & Essential Functions Required: • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, and repetitive motion, • Ability to lift up to 50lbs and remain on feet for extended periods, • Comfort working in environments with animals, strong odors, cleaning chemicals, and bio-waste, • Basic understanding of cleaning procedures or willingness to learn, • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team, • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this role, • Prior custodial, janitorial, facilities, or industrial cleaning experience, • Experience in animal care, healthcare, medical, or high-sanitation environments, • Strong work ethic and reliability, • Attention to detail and consistency in cleaning standards, • Ability to manage time effectively and complete assigned tasks independently, • Team-oriented mindset, • Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment, • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching, • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and sanitation agents, • Exposure to loud noise, strong odors, and waste materials, • Ability to work around animals of varying sizes and temperaments, • Indoor and outdoor shelter environments, • Regular, in-person interaction with staff, volunteers, visitors, and animals Why This Role Matters Maintaining a clean and sanitary environment is essential to animal health, staff safety, disease prevention, and the overall experience of visitors and adopters.
